    Job Duties


    This is a non-exempt, hourly position without benefits, eligible to work up to 1,500 hours annually (May - April 30).


    Review and process a large volume of (e-mail, written and telephonic) requests from employers, employer representatives, third party vendors, agency staff and clients regarding employer accounts, tax liability and unemployment insurance (UI) benefits.


    Ensure activities comply with UI tax laws and requirements, including establishing new accounts; assigning experience ratings (manually and electronically) based on status to determine tax liability; responding to formal protests regarding tax rates and amounts due or paid; processing changes (e.g., name, acquisition or merger status); preparing and distributing 940 certifications; providing updates to employer records; etc.

    When tax rate changes are recorded, notify employers and appropriate tax staff.


    Access automated system (Virginia Unemployment Insurance System) and records to review and update information; contact appropriate parties to obtain information; determine corrective action and make necessary adjustments; and document actions.


    Reconcile reports to ensure appropriate tax rates are applied; conduct research when issues are detected; make adjustments as necessary; and ensure file documentation is forwarded to proper custodian.

    Provide technical assistance to employers regarding iReg/iFile (electronic filing system) issues.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of basic accounting practices; related payroll tax reporting requirements; and office operations.

    Strong organizational, customer service, analytical, problem solving, and computer (word processing, data entry and spreadsheets) skills.


    Ability to collect and analyze data; review and reconcile information; identify and request proper posting entry to resolve issues; use automated systems to review and report information.


    Ability to operate a calculator and personal computer; communicate effectively orally and in writing; work effectively with the public and agency staff; present facts in a concise, organized format; meet tight deadlines; and work independently and also as a team member.

    Additional Considerations

    Experience working in tax (e.g., computation, analysis, examination or reporting), accounting, finance, or payroll.

    Experience working with accounting software programs preferred.
