Medical Lab Technician - Blood BankFull-time / 32 hours per week / 3rd shift

Summary
Performs variety of laboratory procedures under supervision, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist physician in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Formal Education Required
Associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
OR
Undergraduate degree in Science with acceptable transcripts which must include:
Sixty (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination,
AND
ii.
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS.
(This training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above)OR
iii. Completion of Summa Health Lab Tech 1 training program with eligibility for BOC exam.
Certifications
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Registry eligible for Board of Certification exam as MLT, or MLS categorical.
Registry eligible staff must obtain certification within 15 months of hire/promotion into Medical Laboratory Technician position.
Experience & Training Required
Ability to read, comprehend and follow detailed laboratory procedures, protocols, and instructions.
Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department
Minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment.
Other Skills, Competencies And Qualifications
Manual dexterity sufficient to operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, identify, and correct technical problems.
Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel in a professional fashion.
Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the expectations defined in the employee handbook, HR and departmental policies.Population Specific Competency:
Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies.
Level Of Physical Demands
Medium:
Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
