    Description

    Under general direction, leads, coordinates, and performs work of sworn and non-sworn police department staff including field, dispatching, and administrative operations in support of law enforcement, traffic control and crime prevention;as a sworn peace officer authorized to carry firearms,protects life and District facilities and property through the enforcement of laws, board policies and administrative regulations; coordinates, plans, and schedules law enforcement activities and assignments, including communications and station operations; coordinates and conducts training programs for police officers; and performs other related duties as assigned.

    Supervision

    Works under the direct supervision ofthe Chief of College Police.

    May provide work direction to employees as needed.
    Work Schedule

    40 hours/week, 12 months/year
    *Position may require non-standard hours (nights and weekends). Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to include nights, weekends, holidays and special events.

    Examples of Duties

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed by employees in this classification.
    • Leads,coordinates, and performswork of sworn and non-sworn police department staff including field, dispatching, and administrative operations in support of law enforcement, traffic control and crime prevention.
    • As a sworn peace officer authorized to carry firearms, protects life and District facilities and propertythrough the enforcement of laws, board policies and administrative regulations.
    • Coordinates, and schedules law enforcement activities and assignments, including communications and station operations.
    • Coordinates and conducts training programs for police officers; evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of various training program methods and procedures.
    • Maintains equipment inventories.
    • Reviews existing state and federal statutes or regulations related to public safety and assists with modification of practices, protocols and/or procedures.
    • Assists with the administration of the lost and found services.
    • Assists with the administration of parking and traffic control programs and transportation coordination.
    • Assists with the collection and disposal of hazardous materials.
    • Assists local police department(s), and district attorney offices, and other law enforcement agencies to support the prosecution of cases as appropriate.
    • Safely operates an automobile, SUV, or truck to perform patrols, conduct observations, and respond to emergency situations and calls for service.
    • Safely operates police weapons, including but not limited to firearms, tasers, and batons.
    • May assist with roll call briefings for officers and dispatchers.
    • May assist with or conduct the background investigation for new employees and police cadets.
    • May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or Police Cadets.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    The education, training and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties.

    Education and Experience:

    High school diploma or equivalent

    Three (3) years of sworn law enforcement experience with a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)certified Police Department.

    Licenses/Certificates/Other Requirements
    • Possession of valid Basic, Intermediate and Advanced certificates issued by the California Commission on POST.
    • Possession of a valid Supervisory certificate issued by the California Commission on POST is required within twelve (12) months of appointment.
    • Possession of valid Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates is required.
    • Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
    Knowledge of:
    • Current police practices, protocols, procedures and codes,
    • Principles and practices of law enforcement
    • Rules of evidence.
    • Criminal law, investigation techniques and prevention methods.
    • Use and care of firearms.
    • Law enforcement training procedures and methods.
    • Techniques for effectively interacting with a wide variety of people in hostile and emergency situations.
    • Safety practices and precautions pertaining to law enforcement work.
    • Emergency disaster and first aid procedures.
    • Parking enforcement and traffic control.
    • Laws, regulations, standards, and/or requirements applicable to the areas of assignment.
    • Standard office practices or procedures.
    • Standard office software and modern office equipment.
    • Standard formats for business correspondence and other communications.
    • Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
    Ability to:
    • Assist in the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the police training program.
    • Gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence.
    • Provide a secure working environment for employees and students.
    • Analyze situations quickly and accurately and take an effective course of action.
    • Operate various police equipment including radio communication equipment, firearms and other technical law enforcement equipment.
    • Demonstrate safe and effective law enforcement practices.
    • Interpret and apply Board policies, administrative regulations and department procedures regarding safety and conduct.
    • Apply law enforcement procedures pertaining to arrest, search and seizure, and rules of evidence.
    • Use independent judgment and determine appropriate courses of action in accordance with District and law enforcement policies, procedures, and regulations.
    • Remain calm and maintain order in an emergency or threatening situations.
    • Apply legal use of force if necessary.
    • Interrogate suspects and interview complainants and witnesses.
    • Safely operate an automobile, SUV, or truck.
    • Safely operate police weapons including, but not limited to, firearms, tasers, and batons.
    • Research, apply, and explain the laws, regulations, policies and/or procedures applicable to the areas of assignment.
    • Interpret, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Present clear and concise oral and written reports.
    • Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.
    • Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).
    • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.
    • Prepare reports, correspondence, and other documents using multiple business formats.
    • Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines.
    • Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others.
    • Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact, and patience.
    • Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.
    • Work and perform duties independently.
    • Perform and prioritize multiple tasks.
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:

    • Mobility: frequent walking, sitting, and standing for long periods; frequent kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and reaching above and below desk level.
    • Dexterity: frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequent grasping to handle individual papers, write and take notes, and feel individual objects.
    • Lifting/Carrying: frequent lifting/carrying of papers, files, equipment, and materials weighing up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
    • Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close-up work.
    • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and speaking in person and on the telephone.
    • Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent contact with others including extensive public contact; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.
    • Other Requirements: Must meet background and character qualifications for this position pursuant to the provisions of California State Government Code Section 1031(d), and in accordance with standards established by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST); must satisfactorily pass physical and psychological examinations pursuant to the provisions of California State Government Code Section 1031(f), and in accordance with standards established by California POST
    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    • Work is sometimes performed in an indoor office setting but may frequently be performed outdoors in varied types of weather conditions.
    • Work schedule may include rotating shifts.

    Salary

    The Police Sergeant classification salary range is currently R-48.

    Starting salary: Step 1 $7,660.42 to Step 3 $8,445.63 per month, based on training and experience.

    Salary range: Step 1 $7,660.42 to Step 10 $12,110.16 per month (including longevity steps)
