    Brief Description
    Manages a satellite office, specialized unit or area to provide services to youths under departmental supervision to include assessment, court processing, placement and management or coordination between treatment providers and collaborative team members

    Management Scope:
    Supervises one (1) Assistant Supervisor and generally ten (10) non-exempt staff members.

    Serves generally 200 to 500 youths and families each year, with an annual operating budget of approximately $200,000 to $500,000.Detailed DescriptionManages a satellite office, specialized unit or area by planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling all activities to ensure effective quality service delivery, supervision and direction and that the health, safety and equipment needs of staff and youths are met.

    Manages the assignment of cases by maintaining an equitable caseload/workload balance, determining, scheduling and prioritizing assignments and conducting administrative hearings to ensure that high standards of rehabilitative serves are provided; audits case files and provides training based on findings.

    Hires, trains and supervises staff. Develops implements and evaluates strategic plans, policies and procedures to accomplish goals.

    Participates in staff and management meetings, task forces and committees to assist in information sharing, planning and problem solving, and participates in in-service training sessions.

    Develops, collects, maintains and interprets statistical data and other information systems to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of personnel and other available resources.

    Reviews and approves transfer cases from the intake unit to the court unit, diversion units and those being closed and returned to central records; and assists with assessments of referred youths during sudden increases in caseload and/or during staff shortage.

    Serves as back-up to staff and assumes all duties as necessary, i.e., administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.

    Must be physically able to perform "handling with care techniques, including takedowns, chasing and restraining youth" as outlined in the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) requirement.

    Assists with budget development and control by managing supply and equipment inventories, predicting needs, preparing PIR's and approving all requisitions and purchase orders.

    Communicates with juvenile court Judges, court clerks, attorneys, members of the District Attorney's Office, police and community leaders for the purpose of information sharing, problem solving and positive public relations and resource building.

    Performs other duties as assigned.


    Job RequirementsEducation, Experience and Training:


    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Law, Corrections, Counseling, Law, Business Management, Public Administration, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Education, or in a job related field of study.

    Three (3) years of professional work related experience, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.


    Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    Knowledge of standard software applications.

    Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.

    Must possess thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of correctional casework, management and experience in the specialized area of assignment preferred.

    Requires thorough knowledge of all applicable federal, state and local rules, regulations and standards. Must become a Certified Juvenile Probation Officer within 6 months of employment. Must posses a valid Texas Driver's License, with a good driving record. Must pass an extensive background investigation. Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment. The employee will also be subject to shift changes.

    • "Position requires working with juveniles who may have committed dangerous/ aggressive acts; should possess a high tolerance for working in an emotionally demanding/stressful work environment."
    • An employee may be transferred to another department, shift, location, or facility based on the needs of the Department.
    • Working in a 24-hour facility may make the employee subject to working mandatory overtime or remaining on duty and working all, or a part of, an additional shift ("double shift").
    • The incumbent is / may be considered to be 'essential personnel' subject to being held over or called back to a work location or alternate site at all times. When required, you will be notified by your supervisor.
    • Must be at least 21 years of age (for applicable positions) and must pass all portions (physical/written) of the Juvenile Academy to continue employment or all standards related to PREA and Ethics for specific positions

    Physical/Environmental Requirements:
    Standard office environment. Must be able to visit various off-site locations.
