    Position Summary

    The Emerging Healthcare Professional is Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Emergency Medical Technician that performs all job functions under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. The Emerging Healthcare Professional is an individual that is seeking to gain clinical knowledge in a healthcare atmosphere while they are continuing their education. This individual demonstrates flexibility and must be willing to float between Appalachian Regional Healthcare System (ARHS) facilities, as assigned. Facilities include, but are not limited to: Appalachian Regional Behavioral Health Hospital, Appalachian Regional Medical Associates, Cannon Memorial Hospital, and Watauga Medical Center. The Emerging Healthcare Professional is subject to float between ARHS facilities, but may not be assigned to one specific unit. This individual floats to various departments and may work in various roles within the scope of a CNA. These roles include, but are not limited to: Staff CNA (Unit Based), Uncertified Medical Office Assistant (MOA), Behavioral Health Technician / Patient Observation Technician, Telemetry Technician, or Unit Secretary.

    The Emerging Healthcare Professional maintains accountability as it relates to ARHS's vision, mission, and values. The following requirements must be met in order to remain in this position. Failure to meet these requirements will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination:
    • Works 36 hours per 6 week schedule
    • Required to work 1 Holiday
    • Required to Work 1 Special Event Day
    If hired for this position, the Emerging Healthcare Professional is required to attend one (1) General Orientation Session (Monday), and one (1) Nursing Orientation Session (Tuesday). Compensation is a flat rate of $22.00 per hour.

    Minimum Education
    • High School Diploma or GED is required at time of hire.
    • Licensed as a Certified Nursing Assistant 1 or 2 in the State of North Carolina OR,
    • Licensed as a EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate in the State of North Carolina.
    Experience
    • Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred, but not required.
    Required Registration/License/Certification
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued from the American Heart Association is required at time of hire.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physician and acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills.
    • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians.
    • Typing, computer skills, word processing, mathematical skills.
    • Must possess excellent written, oral and computer communication skills.
    • Must have the ability to coordinate and organize details.
    • Personable Approach.
    • Must have the ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
    • Openness to change, flexibility, and adapability.
    Physical Demands
    • Manual dexterity and mobility
    • Prolonged, extensive or considerable sitting and at times, standing/walking
    • Bending, squatting, twisting, turning
    • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less
    Working Conditions
    • Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases
    • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment; odorous chemicals and specimens; and, unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces uneven surfaces), etc.
    • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays); and emergencies
    • Continuous sitting or standing most days >8 hours per day
    • Episodes of walking/standing greater than >2 hours per shift
    • Speaking, reading, and writing > 8 hours per day
    • Needed with frequency: lift, carry; push and/or, pull <30 lbs
    • Frequently per shift: bends; squats; kneels; twists; turns; and reaches
    • Frequently per minute: hand, finger, and wrist repetition; and moderate dexterity
    • Frequently per hour, exposed to soft voices >3ft away.
