    Summary

    Whatcom County is currently recruiting for a Juvenile Detention Officer I.

    Juvenile Detention is a safe and secure environment for youth who have been arrested pending a court appearance or who have been sentenced to serve time after a court appearance. The Juvenile Detention Officer position serves a critical role ensuring a humane, safe and rehabilitative environment for juvenile offenders.

    Whatcom County Superior Court is an independent branch of government and personnel employed under the judicial branch of government. The positions are in accordance with GR 29. Under GR 29, the Presiding Judge is responsible for the daily operations of the Court, which includes working conditions, hiring, discipline, and termination decisions.

    This position has a bona fide occupational qualification and you must be 21+ years of age.
    You must submit the Integrity Standards and Self-Examination Questions AND disclosure of Crimes against Children and Vulnerable Adults with your application.

    Key Duties Include:
    • Monitoring the detention facility security to ensure the safety of juveniles and staff
    • Directing and/or participating in activities and programs for juveniles
    • Escorting juveniles to appointments, as well as overseeing visits from authorized visitors
    • Documenting observations of daily behaviors, including writing reports

    Salary Range:
    • MCBA- Range 112.1
    Hiring rate depends on qualifications. This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
    Qualifications

    Requires a high school diploma or GED AND two years of experience working with youth or two years of experience in residential treatment and supervision, military security or supervision.

    OR

    Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or closely related field.

    Desired:
    • Experience with at-risk youth and security.
    • A bachelor's degree in social sciences or criminology.
    Special Requirements:
    • Driving record that meets County standards.
    • Possess a valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
    • Pass polygraph exam.
    • Background check must meet County criteria.
