    Position Summary :

    Primary function is to facilitate the daily operations of surgical services, including scheduling, logging, communication, printing of required documents, and entry of audit data. The Perioperative Secretary performs primary clerical duties and other duties as assigned within Surgical Services. Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patients'/caregivers' rights, as identified within the institution.

  • Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
  • Communicates professionally using the SUCCESS Standards.
  • Schedules all Surgical Services procedures and preop education appointments and communicates to appropriate departments.
  • Communicates need for tests and requests for patient information to appropriate departments/personnel.
  • Performs clerical activities as needed by the unit.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Utilizes nursing documentation forms/computer according to hospital/unit policy and guidelines within Unit Secretary scope of practice.
  • Compiles and collates patient information for the day and checks for completeness of patient chart.
  • Compiles and distributes the preliminary OR schedule to appropriate departments.
  • Assures the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of all patients.
  • Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the Medical Center.
  • Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established policy and procedure under the direction of the RN.
  • Maintains all unit specific and educational requirements.
  • Attends unit staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Performs appropriately and accepts responsibility for delegated duties.
  • Participates in unit quality improvement program as directed.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills using lines of authority appropriately.
  • Communicates patient problems, concerns using appropriate lines of authority in a timely and effective manner.
  • Qualifications:

  • Previous clerical experience required. Healthcare and/or hospital experience, preferred.
  • Adequate typing skills, legible handwriting and knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of operative procedures preferred.
  • Experience with computer entry and word processing, required.
  • Education:

  • High School diploma or GED, required.
  • Each new hire candidate who is offered employment must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and pre-employment background checks before starting work.

    *Salary/Hourly wage range for this position is posted. Actual pay will be determined based on verified experience as well as internal equity.
