    Job Description

    Jonesboro Police Department Internship Program

    I. Policy

The Jonesboro Police Department collaborates with local colleges and high schools to provide internship programs for students. This partnership helps maintain student interest in law enforcement after graduation by offering hands-on experience.

    II. Program Eligibility and Dismissal

    • Requirements:
    • • Selection
    • • Adherence to Policy
    • • Dismissal

To be eligible, applicants must complete an internship application, be at least 18 years old, possess a valid ID, pass a drug screen and background check, and have no felony or DWI convictions.

The division commander selects the most qualified applicant based on the application, background, and interview. The Chief of Police gives final approval.

Interns receive access to department policy and are expected to adhere to applicable portions. They also sign an 'Internship Agreement' outlining minimum standards of conduct during the internship period.

The department retains the right to remove any applicant or serving intern from the program at any time.

    III. Procedures

    • Department Access:
    • • Due to confidentiality concerns, interns may be restricted from accessing certain records, computer programs, and areas of the department as determined by the division commander.
    • • Interns must maintain confidentiality and adhere closely to the requirements of the 'Internship Agreement'.
    • B. Recording Time
      • The assigned supervisor tracks the intern's time of service and makes that record available to the school. All work is considered voluntary and interns do not receive compensation.
      • Interns should be considerate of their arrival expectation and notify their supervisor if they need to be absent. Interns are not expected to work during holidays designated by their academic institution or those designated for civilians by the City of Jonesboro.

      C. Supervisor Responsibilities

      • Supervisors make efforts to maintain a working liaison relationship with the academic supervisor of the intern.
      • Supervisors strive to provide a learning experience for the student and attempt to provide a worthwhile project or assignment rather than mundane office duties or mere observation.
      • Supervisors are responsible for the safety of interns and shall not allow them to place themselves in positions that create a substantial risk of injury.
      • Duties of the supervisor include completing an evaluation of the intern at the conclusion of the internship period. Such reports should be completed in a timely manner to afford the student proper credit with the academic institution.
