Job description
Independent Contractor Physician Opportunity – Flexible 20–40 Hours/Week
Applicants must hold an active, unrestricted medical license in Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, or Wisconsin.
We are looking for Board-Certified Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physicians to support our clinical review services. In this role, you'll evaluate Prior Authorization requests for treatments, medications, SNF placements, DME, and other services. Reviewers rely on nationally recognized medical standards and health plan criteria to deliver objective, expert assessments while upholding ERISA/DOL and state regulatory requirements.
ABOUT US
Since 1983, the Medical Review Institute of America (MRIoA) has been a leading provider of technology-driven utilization management and clinical review services. Our longstanding reputation is built on quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
At MRIoA, our physician reviewers are essential to our mission. You are not just supporting a process—you are a vital part of our organization and the high standards we maintain.
ROLE SUMMARY
Physician reviewers examine Prior Authorization submissions—covering treatments, medications, SNF stays, DME, and more—to determine whether requests meet evidence-based clinical guidelines and health plan policies. Reviews must reflect impartial judgment and comply with ERISA/DOL requirements along with applicable state regulations.
This independent contractor role offers significant scheduling flexibility, allowing you to work 20–40 hours per week according to your availability. Daytime availability is required.
IS THIS A GOOD FIT FOR YOU?
This opportunity may be ideal if you want to:
- Apply your medical expertise while working remotely from home.
- Reduce or step away from hands-on patient care.
- Stay current with evolving clinical guidelines in your specialty.
- Gain deeper insight into the utilization management and Prior Authorization processes.
- Work 20–40+ hours per week depending on your schedule (with required daytime availability).
- Participate in Peer-to-Peer calls when needed - required.
Important: We are seeking individuals who can provide availability 5–7 days per week with flexible daytime hours. Occasional or infrequent availability (e.g., 1–2 days/week) will not meet our operational needs.
This is a 1099 Independent Contractor arrangement, giving you the freedom to structure your own work schedule.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
- You will be covered under MRIoA's Errors and Omissions insurance (traditional malpractice coverage is not required).
- Work can be performed from any location within the U.S. (patient information cannot be accessed outside of the U.S.).
- This is a non‑employee independent contractor role
Skills & Experience
- Proficient with computer systems and comfortable navigating digital tools.
- Willing and able to participate in Peer‑to‑Peer discussions during standard business hours.
- Must consistently apply healthcare plan criteria when making clinical determinations.
- Maintain a 95% or better quality in case completion.
Education & Credentials
- MD or DO degree required.
- Board Certification in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine is mandatory.
- Must hold an active, unrestricted medical license in Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, or Wisconsin. Or hold a current/active "Letter of Qualification" from the IMLCC and be willing to get additional licenses.
Work Environment
This is a remote, work‑from‑home position. You should be able to remain seated at a desk and use a computer, phone, and standard office equipment as part of your daily workflow.
Commitment to Diversity
We believe that a diverse workforce strengthens our organization. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, genetic information, or any other protected characteristic.
Drug‑Free & Compliance Requirements
This company maintains a drug‑free workplace. Candidates may be required to complete a background check before beginning work. All new hires must complete a Drug Screen and agree to applicable Compliance Regulations on their first day.
