    Summary


    The Bridge and Structures Project Engineer 2 is responsible for leading the structural design and analysis efforts on a variety of engineering projects.

    The person in this position must be licensed to serve as engineer-of-record on assigned projects in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire.

    The person in this position should show a strong working knowledge in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications; and/or the International Building Code and ASCE 7:
    Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. The person in this position should be able to quickly learn and apply other design codes as needed.

    The person in this position is expected to demonstrate a high level of expertise related to structural engineering and provide leadership and guidance to less experienced team members as necessary.

    This position requires a willingness and ability to identify and lead resolution of interdisciplinary design issues.

    Software

    Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) - Basic
    Market Sector Software (MathCAD, AutoCAD or MicroStation) - Basic
    Expert understanding of structural analysis software
    Independently analyze very complex structures
    Actively mentor others
    Technical Expertise

    Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals
    Writes clear internal communications (emails, meeting minutes, etc.)
    Performs complex structural design tasks independently
    Independently checks basic designs
    Provides unique solutions to complex challenges
    Expert understanding of technical writing
    Divides complex projects into manageable tasks
    Leads design efforts as engineer-of-record on a variety of projects
    Leads complex technical reports
    Conducts senior review of memos, technical reports, and proposals
    Mentors others on design tasks
    Leads internal mentoring sessions
    Contributes to proposals
    Demonstrates expertise via presenting at conferences or publishing articles
    Teamwork

    Leads large structural design teams (3-5 people) to complete structural tasks. Structures lead overseeing delivery of structures work on small to moderate multi-discipline projects. Actively mentors others.
    Project Delivery

    Prepares structural calculations and cost estimates independently
    Creates CAD markups
    Writes technical specifications and develops contract plans independently
    Advanced understanding of multi-discipline project delivery
    Actively mentor others and mentors CAD staff in plan development
    Improves or develops internal processes (e.g., checklists)
    Understanding Budget and Schedule


    Advanced understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets (i.e., estimate schedule for complex tasks); Able to predict and deliver individual tasks within a set level of effort.

    Able to consistently meet budget and schedule expectations on projects. Develops budgets and schedules for complex projects. Breaks down complex projects into logical tasks. Able to prioritize multiple assignments to successfully deliver all assigned projects on time and on budget. Mentors others on above.
    Industry Standards and Regulations

    Expert understanding of standard design codes. Understands limitations of design codes. Understands when deviation from design codes is appropriate. Actively mentors others in design code deviations and interpretation.
    Client Interaction

    Answers questions and resolves issues related to individual design tasks. Resolves project issues on moderate to complex projects. Present solutions on complex projects; comfortable leading client meetings. Consistently uses appropriate communication tools (e.g., email versus phone) and understand appropriate messaging. Understands legal risks. Develops concepts for pursuits. Participates in project interviews. Actively mentor others on above.

    Level of Work/Accountability

    Primarily performs advanced technical tasks on complex, demanding projects for the market sector. Operates with a high level of autonomy. Reviews the work of others. Mentors others with less experience. May provide some project management services.
    Supervisory Duties


    May be a supervisor:
    Oversees team operations and the daily workflow of the team
    Organizes workflow and ensures that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
    Recruits and hires new employees
    Implements training for new hires and identifies training opportunities for current staff
    Communicates information from leadership to employees and vice versa
    Monitors employee productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching
    Sets goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company's plans and vision and communicates them to employees
    Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
    Decides on reward and promotion based on performance
    Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy
    Education and/or Experience

    Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred
    Years of experience required: 10 years
    Years of experience required with advanced degree: 9 years
    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    PE required; SE preferred (SE required where available in state of residence in area of primary practice)
    Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record
