    Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) is a non-profit, incorporated oil spill response cooperative whose current membership includes oil and pipeline companies that engage in or intend to undertake oil and gas exploration, development, production and/or pipeline transport activities on the North Slope of Alaska.

    The Alaska Clean Seas Operations Department is looking to fill a Mechanic position at ACS Base in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. This position is open to both internal and external applicants.

    All qualified and interested applicants must complete the requirements of this posting prior to 5pm on the closing date of May 15th, 2024.

    Position Summary:

    This position is responsible to perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM's) and equipment repairs to marine vessels large and/or small, light duty vehicles, skid steers, loaders, loaders, and spill response related equipment. This position may also design and fabricate equipment and modifications to set standards and completes project work as requested. This position requires a variety of minor facility maintenance skills that includes rough carpentry, painting, and minor electrical repairs. Additionally, duties include spill cleanup and leading or coordinating cleanup done by contract personnel and SRT's; assisting with or instructing SRT training, facilitate the training of contract personnel ensuring compliance with all regulations; support accumulation and disposal of spill waste and monitor/maintain integrity of waste management storage sites; arrange for shipping of hazardous wastes; maintain spill response equipment inventory consistent with contingency plans; ensure equipment is in good working order and assist in maintaining records associated w/permits and other regulatory requirements. If assigned to an outlying area in the absence of the ACS Lead Technician, supervise cleanup crews and SRT teams. Be knowledgeable and proficient with ACS computer systems, time-sheets, work orders, preventive maintenance program, equipment inventory, response readiness requirements, and ACS policies and procedures.

    Other responsibilities consist of performing safety observations, identifying and recording hazard analyses of specific jobs, perform site inspections around the assigned facility to ensure areas are free from potential environmental and safety risks. Other duties may also include welding and metal fabrication, attend and participate in meetings, exercises, drills, training, assisting with operational, organizational or administrative tasks as directed as well as perform primary spill responder duties on the North Slope, inland and offshore.

    Essential Functions:

    • Demonstrate professional skills and abilities equal to a Certified Mechanic
    • Complete timely maintenance, diagnostics, and and repairs on vehicles, response equipment and vessel propulsion systems including electrical and hydraulics systems
    • Conduct preventative maintenance (PM's) on response inventory and related equipment according to monthly PM scheduler; conduct modifications and repairs as assigned.
    • Ensure equipment is response ready and promptly report any discrepancies or repairs that may affect readiness.
    • Respond to and cleanup spills in the area(s) assigned and other areas as requested
    • Collect and manage disposal of deceased wildlife
    • Assist waste handling and disposal, along with collection and management of hazardous waste
    • Manage Satellite Accumulations Areas (SAA's) (i.e., aerosol, batteries, etc.) in your areas
    • Carryout training and certification of various equipment (airboat, small boat, tractor, forklift, loader, man-lift and scissor lift operation) etc.
    • Inventory tracking and control spare parts including research and justification necessary for inventory replacement
    • Daily safety and fluid checks on spill response trucks and forklifts.
    • Assist with development and implementation of safety, training, and maintenance policies, best practices and procedures, to ensure all North Slope Spill Response Teams and equipment are prepared for emergency response in a safe and effective manner.
    • Maintain 100% mandatory and regulatory "Compliance Readiness" in training to ensure personal spill response readiness.

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Minimum 3 years mechanic experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy duty and light vehicles and equipment; marine inboard engines; 2-cycle engines, intermediate knowledge of facility maintenance including carpentry, painting, and basic electrical.
    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • Self-directed and motivated to work under minimal supervision
    • Operate variety of equipment including truck, Auto-car, loader, warehouse equipment, forklift, pallet and hand truck, response equipment, and various powered and un-powered hand tools
    • Current CPR and First Aid
    • Class "A" CDL with Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME); and good driving record required.
    • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certificate
    • Current RCRA and Hazardous Waste and Materials Handling certification
    • Ability to Donn and Doff and wear a respirator (half and full-face)
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with all levels of management
    • Flexible and adaptable to change and thinks quickly on their feet
    • Clearly speak, read, write and understand the English language

    Physical Requirements:

    • Unassisted physical requirements include all those necessary to meet minimum qualifications of a qualified spill responder: lifting up to 70 lbs; carrying up to 50 lbs; pushing/pulling up to 100lbs; shoveling up to 20lbs.
    • Position also requires frequent walking, standing and occasional sitting, squatting, bending, reaching and keyboarding.
    • Position is required to meet DOT and HAZWOPER physical requirements including being cleared to wear a full face air purifying respirator.

    Working Conditions:

    • Position is North Slope assigned with normal working hours of 12 hours a day, 7 days/week and normally works 2 weeks on shift and 2 weeks off with an alternate. The position is on-call 24 hours/day while on the North Slope or assigned temporarily to another project. Flexibility regarding hours of work and length of shift is required as needed to meet business demands. Position may be recalled at any time during spill emergencies.
    • Position will be working with hazardous materials and wastes.
    • Position may be subject to extreme arctic conditions while working outdoors or while traveling to/from North Slope locations. Arctic PPE is provided.
    • Position may require travel by automobile and other means of transportation across rough, bumpy, unpaved roads or tundra for up to 6 hours or longer.
    • Uneven and/or slick/icy walking surfaces may also be encountered.
    • Dress code is professional commensurate with North Slope practices where applicable.
    • ANSI standard safety footwear is required at all times while working.
