- Full General Medical Council registration.
- Evidence of experience with cataract surgery.
- Clinical training and experience in general ophthalmology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT, and sub-speciality training in Medical Retina
- Experience with working in antiVEGF treatment clinics with DMO, AMD and RVO
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).

Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist (Medical Retinal Neuro Ophthalmology) Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
This appointment offers exciting opportunities in light of the major changes currently taking place in the ophthalmology department within the Trust. We have expanded our medical retina service into the community, with improved access to both the VEGF service as well as newer virtual clinical services. This provides invaluable opportunity to expand the whole medical retina service including subspecialist services such as uveitis, choroidal melanoma/naevus clinics and neuro-ophthalmology. Our established community ophthalmic link provides a platform for development of new integrated pathways within the community.
This position is aimed to develop, expand and failsafe our current virtual review environment for medical retina patients. We currently run services in general medical retina, rapid access and emergency medical retina, choroidal naevus, diabetic retinopathy and hydroxychloroquine services. This new position is required for the development of robust clinical pathways and protocols, working with our Band 8a medical retina specialist optometrists to deliver the virtual eye clinic platform. In addition, working with our imaging team and community team to design new ICB funded virtual pathways as recommended by GIRFT and supported by the clinical programme group.
The post is an initial locum post commencing in July 2024 with the view to extend to a substantive post after 12 months.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
The post-holder will help provide ophthalmic services for Gloucestershire, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. He/she will be expected to work closely with general practitioners and optometrists in providing a seamless service.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

4 To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
4 To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
4 To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
4 To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division and the Trust.
4 Participate in the 1:9 Consultant on call rota
Ideally the candidate will have had experience in all aspects of medical retina with independent surgical experience.
The post could be filled on a whole or part time basis. Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.

Teaching/Training (as agreed with Specialty Director)4 To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of MMC and related requirements.
4 The appointee will also take a full role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including clinical meetings and tutorials. Medical students are currently taken from several universities, but the Clinical Academy based at the University of Bristol is expected to provide the majority of undergraduates in future.
4 Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.
4 The department subscribes to a wide range of journals and there are good medical libraries at both Gloucester and Cheltenham with full literature search facilities. The department is part of a Trust wide intranet system and is well served for literature search and other internet functions.
Research4 The Consultant Ophthalmologists participate in national research trials where appropriate and the majority of these trials are externally funded and include commercial studies. Ophthalmology also undertakes some local research projects.
4 Gloucester Trust has a well established clinical trial unit with several medical retina clinical trials team. There is a dedicated clinical trials schedule which can be built into the timetable. The access for NHS patients to the clinical trials performs as part of the normal treatment options for all eligible patients.

Strategic Development4 Currently Ophthalmic surgical services are provided at Cheltenham General and Tewkesbury Hospitals. Outpatient services are delivered at 11 sites. Both the siting and style of service delivery are under constant review, and will change in coming years to deliver the services required by the community.
Accountability4 The post-holder will be immediately accountable to the retinal lead, Specialty Director and Divisional Lead.
4 The post-holder will be expected to undertake appraisal and to respond to any identified development needs.
The post-holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the post.
