    About the Position

    Career Opportunity:
    The city of Las Vegas Invites Applicants for GIS Analyst I. This position Implements programs and procedures to expand city-wide use of the geographic information system; and performs a variety of technical duties as required.

    The Ideal Candidate: Will Have experience with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. They will also have experience with Geodatabases and proficiency in SQL and ESRI Model Builder. The ideal candidate should also have knowledge of the operations, services, and activities of a geographic information systems program.

    Distinguishing Characteristics

    This is the entry-level class in the GIS Analyst series. Since this class is typically an entry-level class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

    Supervision Received

    Receives general supervision from the assigned Information Technologies Supervisor and higher management staff.
    Type of Examination:

    A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a City position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

    ELIGIBLE LIST: You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.

    Selection Process: Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check,and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

    EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

    Essential Functions:
    1. Researches GIS application needs by speaking with users; develops and updates applications or processes to meet user needs.
    2. Collects, compiles and analyzes information for various sources on GIS application requirements.
    3. Analyzes GIS data using spatial and tabular methods.
    4. Performs data maintenance and quality control procedures.
    5. Prepares reports which present and interpret data and identify alternatives; makes and justifies alternations.
    6. Creates maps; creates hard copy maps as requested.
    7. Programs, evaluates and tests the performance of GIS applications.
    8. Responds to inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
    9. Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files.
    Marginal functions:
    1. Stays abreast of trends, programs and innovations.
    2. Provides GIS user support.
    3. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Experience:

    One year of GIS mapping or GIS software experience.

    Training:

    Two years of full-time general degree coursework requirements from an accredited college or university. May substitute a combination of equivalent education and related experience. The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.

    COMPENSATION

    Annual Base Pay Increases
    • Negotiated as part of the collective bargaining process.
    • Step (Merit) Increase - typically awarded on the anniversary date of hire, up to range maximum.

    Retirement
    • Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.
    Deferred Compensation
    • The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.
    Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
    • Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium.
    Life and AD&D Insurance
    • City provides $20,000 policies at no cost.
    • Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase.
    Disability Insurance
    • City provides a long term disability policy:
      • LTD: Employees who normally work at least 30 hours/week are eligible. Benefits begin after 90 days of disability. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation.
