    The City of Valdez Parks and Recreation is gearing up for SUMMER

    We are hiring a Day Camp Director to help coordinate and oversee the summer fun program.

    Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, this position will coordinate, supervise, plan and implement the daily operations of the summer day camp program. This position supervises any of the following Recreation Staff I, II, III, IV, V and program participants.

    This is a temporary, non-benefited position working up to 37.5 hours per week for the duration of the camp season. This position will work various hours per week, which may include mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. Anticipated start date is May 20, 2024 and typcially runs through mid to late August.

    Minimum requirements;
    • Minimum 21 years or older
    • Supervisory experience in a recreation setting is desired.
    • Obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR/AED Certification within the first month of work (training provided).
    • Valid State of Alaska Driver's License. Must provide driving abstract
    • Must pass background check.
    • Experience based on industry best practices and standard for any instructional work.
    • Two years' experience or related educational course work in the specified field for any instructional work.
    Position is open until filled, review of applications is continual.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Provide customer service to program participants.
    • Research, develop, organize and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities which promote development and progression of skills among participants.
    • Ability to adapt instructions for participants with special conditions or physical limitations.
    • Transport participants in a City vehicle to off-site locations as needed.
    • Assists with program record keeping, including confidential participant records.
    • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions, and intervenes when necessary.
    • Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate reporting.
    • Works as a team member; maintains a cooperative attitude with employees, staff and supervisors.
    • Attends staff meetings and in-service trainings, as required.
    • Communicates with participants, parents, staff and supervisors using a variety of methods.
    • Supervises and directs program staff.
    • Maintains a clean and safe environment for all participants.
    • Enforces Rules of Conduct and monitors follow through of suspension or ejections and forwards information to supervisor.
    • May perform general cleaning and light maintenance as needed.
    • Must comply with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:
    • Possess good working knowledge of recreation programs, including planning, instruction and operations.
    • Should be highly motivated, upbeat, engaged and enjoy working with youth.
    • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Leadership skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with various age groups.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.
    • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
    • Ability to follow instructions and policies; both written and verbal
    • Ability to act as a role model to participants during activities and trips (cleanliness, punctuality and sportsmanship).
    Physical requirement and work environment:
    • Work environment is varied depending on facility, venue and program; indoor and outdoor year round.
    • Possibility of working in inclement weather.
    • Physical ability to participate in activities; run climb, swim, lift or support the weight of children.
