    Position Description:

    The Department of Art & Visual Culture invites applications for a part-time Instructor in Art History to teach a foundational undergraduate survey course, Art History I: From Pyramids to Cathedrals, to majors and non-majors beginning August 2024. The instructor is required to teach in-person. The appointment is for the Fall semester 2024.

    Applicants should have an active scholarly practice that includes research and writing as well as experience in teaching undergraduate lectures in Art History that interrogate the western canon with an African diasporic focus. The ideal candidate is an innovative scholar whose pedagogical approach to art history employs interdisciplinary methods to interrogate the changing landscape of museums and curatorial studies in the global art and museum industry. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. and prior teaching experience. The appointment requires teaching Art History I: From Pyramids to Cathedrals.

    Qualifications:

    Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in Art History and a minimum of three to five years teaching experience. Advanced Ph.D. candidates and those with an MA in Art History or a similar focus also will be considered. Candidates must have a proven track record of scholarship and be able to demonstrate interdisciplinary and creative approaches in teaching art history. Candidates should be prepared to incorporate object-based learning from the Spelman College Museum permanent collection, special exhibitions, and neighboring arts institutions.
