    Koniag IT Systems, LLC a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking an experienced Power BI Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced business intelligence and data visualization solutions. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in Power BI and the broader Microsoft Power Platform ecosystem. This role requires the ability to transform complex data into actionable insights through compelling dashboards, reports, and analytics solutions that drive informed decision-making. The Power BI SME will serve as the technical authority on all Power BI initiatives, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, performant, and aligned with organizational data strategy.
    The Power BI Subject Matter Expert will be responsible for the full development of Power BI solutions, from requirements gathering through deployment and ongoing maintenance. This role combines technical excellence with strategic thinking to deliver data visualization and analytics solutions that meet complex business intelligence needs. The Power BI SME will work closely with stakeholders, data engineers, and business users to understand requirements, design optimal data models, and create intuitive, impactful visualizations. The SME will also serve as a technical leader and mentor, establishing best practices and promoting data-driven decision-making across the organization. Principal responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    • Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of Power BI dashboards, reports, and paginated reports
    • Architect and implement complex data models using Power BI Desktop, including star schemas, snowflake schemas, and optimized relationships
    • Develop advanced DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) calculations, measures, and calculated columns to support sophisticated analytical requirements
    • Create interactive, user-friendly visualizations that effectively communicate insights to diverse audiences
    • Design and implement Power BI solutions that integrate seamlessly with other Microsoft Power Platform components including Power Apps and Power Automate
    • Connect Power BI to various data sources including Microsoft Dataverse, SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, SharePoint, Excel, APIs, and cloud-based data platforms
    • Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) and Object-Level Security (OLS) to ensure appropriate data access controls
    • Optimize Power BI reports and dashboards for performance, including query optimization and data model efficiency improvements
    • Configure and manage Power BI Service workspaces, including capacity management, gateway configuration, and refresh schedules
    • Develop and implement data refresh strategies including incremental refresh and real-time data connectivity
    • Integrate Power BI solutions with Microsoft Azure services such as Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake, Azure Functions, and Azure Logic Apps
    • Collaborate with data engineers and database administrators to ensure optimal data pipeline architecture
    • Implement Power BI embedding scenarios for custom applications using Power BI Embedded or Power BI REST APIs
    • Create and maintain documentation including technical specifications, data dictionaries, and user guides
    • Establish and enforce Power BI development standards, best practices, and governance policies
    • Conduct code reviews and provide technical guidance to junior developers
    • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to Power BI reports, data sources, and gateway connectivity
    • Provide training and support to end users on Power BI capabilities and self-service analytics
    • Stay current with Power BI updates, new features, and industry best practices
    • Support Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) practices for Power Platform solutions including version control and deployment pipelines
    • Monitor Power BI usage analytics and capacity metrics to ensure optimal system performance
    • Participate in requirements gathering sessions and translate business needs into technical solutions
    • Ensure all Power BI solutions meet security, compliance, and regulatory requirements
    Education and Experience:
    Required:
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, or related field from an accredited college or university
    • Equivalent experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree
    • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing Power BI solutions in enterprise environments
    • 3+ years of experience with the broader Microsoft Power Platform including Power Apps, Power Automate, and Microsoft Dataverse
    • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing complex data models and DAX calculations
    • Proven track record of delivering Power BI solutions that meet business intelligence requirements and drive organizational value
    • Experience with data integration, ETL/ELT processes, and working with diverse data sources
    Preferred:
    • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
    • Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate
    • Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate
    • Microsoft Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate
    • Advanced certifications in Azure data services (e.g., Azure Data Engineer Associate, Azure Database Administrator Associate)
    • Experience supporting government or DoD customers
    • Master's degree in related field
    Desired Skills and Competencies:
    • Experience with advanced Power BI features including aggregations, composite models, and calculation groups
    • Knowledge of Power BI REST API and embedding scenarios
    • Experience with Power BI Report Server (on-premises deployment)
    • Familiarity with R or Python integration within Power BI for advanced analytics
    • Experience with Azure DevOps for Power Platform ALM
    • Knowledge of Tabular Object Model (TOM) and Analysis Services
    • Experience with paginated reports (SSRS-style reports) in Power BI
    • Understanding of data warehousing concepts and dimensional modeling techniques
    • Familiarity with other BI and visualization tools (Tableau, Qlik, etc.) for comparative analysis
    • Experience with real-time streaming data and DirectQuery optimization
    • Knowledge of mobile BI design patterns and responsive report layouts
    • Experience implementing Power BI solutions in multi-tenant environments
    • Understanding of Microsoft Information Protection and data loss prevention in Power BI
    • Experience with Power BI Premium per User (PPU) and Premium capacity management
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and its integration with Power BI
    • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum development methodologies
    • Experience conducting Power BI training and workshops for end users
    • Active participation in Power BI community and contributions to forums or blogs
    • Experience with government data standards and compliance requirements (FedRAMP, FISMA, etc.)
