The Nurse Director is the clinical leader with administrative, fiscal, and personnel responsibility.Under administrative direction of the Associate Chief Nurse, the Nurse Director identifies, develops, and oversees policies and procedures that support excellence in clinical practice and fosters an environment of care which reflects the mission and vision of Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
The Nurse Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining quality standards of nursing care and practice within the clinical area.
The Nurse Director participates in and maintains a collaborative relationship with all disciplines and departments within the organization to create positive patient outcomes, meets the needs of the unit and staff, as well as supports and maintains a professional practice environment.
The Nurse Director is responsible for the recruitment and retention of employees and partnering with the medical leadership to support organizational and departmental goals.
General

Develops departmental short-term and long-term goals in concert with the organizational goals
Clinical Operations Management
Assists with the implementation and evaluation of nursing practice and the delivery of patient care
Prioritizes patient care related and other unit activities
Solves problems and manages conflict in a timely, efficient, and effective manner
Effectively communicates the mission and values of Newton-Wellesley Hospital to staff and to patients
Promotes an environment for learning and team building
Assists in developing departmental short-term and long-term goals in concert with the organizational goals
Designs and implements staffing patterns responsive to a dynamic care environment
Participates actively in hospital committees
Presides and/or participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings and other meetings as required
Promotes collaboration among staff, medical, and administrative colleagues
Communicates with other departments to assure needed services are provided
Acts as a change agent and supports staff through the change process
Identifies and addresses staff, patient, and family issues and concerns
Quality Assurance/Quality Management
Collaborates with the Director and other departments and disciplines to develop and maintain ongoing quality improvement and patient safety activities
Follows up on safety reports and makes changes as needed
Encourages and facilitates staff participation in quality improvement activities
Monitors and evaluates the documentation of nursing practice and patient care
Participates in the resolution of patient/family complaints
Promotes and supports service excellence and patient satisfaction
Develops, promotes, and supports employee engagement initiatives
Maintains and implements departmental policies and procedures in accordance with Joint Commission, DPH, and other regulatory agencies
Ensures a safe environment for patients and staff
Human Resources Management
Provides leadership and direction for the staff
Uses behavioral questioning and the peer interviewing process for the recruitment and retention of competent and compassionate staff
Oversees the orientation process for new employees
Delegates to and supervises staff effectively
Coaches and mentors staff
Identifies staff competency and learning needs and supports their development
Identifies own learning needs and potential areas for growth and improvement
Establishes work schedules and assigns staff to specified areas of responsibility to ensure prompt, safe, and clinically appropriate service to patients
Collaborates with the Human Resource Department related to recruitment, retention, and employee relations; adheres to employment law
Prepares performance appraisal documents in accordance with hospital policy and procedure
Serves as a role model for accountability and professional performance
Holds self and staff to hospital standards
Takes corrective and/or disciplinary action when appropriate
Finance Management
Prepares and manages annual operating and capital budgets
Develops and monitors staffing patterns based on annual budget
Facilitates the development of plans to enhance revenue production and/or decrease cost
Reviews departmental productivity reports and develops variance summaries
Manages the departmental payroll process
Follows purchasing and requisition request policies

Education
Bachelor's with Nursing major required
Master's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, or a related field required
Experience
Minimum 5 years nursing experience
1-2 years management experience preferred
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations (if applicable)
Current Massachusetts RN license
Certification in specialty area preferred
