Job Summary
The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks a Mechanical Engineer to help us with an audacious project - communicating with whales. As part of Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), a project funded by TED, we are designing whale tags and deployment systems to decipher the communication of whales. We are designing whale tags loaded with sensors to measure depth, movement, light, and sound while sticking to the whales (using suction cups). These tags will be deployed and recovered with a network of autonomous drones to families of well-studied whales in the Caribbean. The data we collect then gets analyzed by world-class machine learning researchers.
We have some amount of field testing, and depending on the candidate's performance and projects there is a possibility of field testing in the Caribbean.
NOTE: The Mechanical Engineer will work on campus full-time at our new Science and Engineering Complex (SEC) in Allston, MA and will potentially travel with the team for onsite research outside of the U.S. This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal.
