    Description

    The Machine Shop Manager oversees the operations of the machine shop, including staff, ensuring the efficiency and quality of the manufacturing processes, maintaining equipment and complying with safety regulations. They also play a key role in planning and implementing production schedules, managing budgets, and coordinating activities with other departments such as engineering, quality control and supply chain. Communication, problem solving, continuous improvements along with lean practices are key ingredients of day to day successes.

    Summary of Essential Job Functions:

    • Delegate daily responsibilities and projects to lead associates to achieve departmental and company goals.
    • Manage and supervise a team of machinists, technicians and other shop employees. Includes hiring, training and evaluating staff performance including annual performance reviews.
    • Conduct monthly progress reviews with CNC operators and setup individuals.
    • Assure cost and quality objectives are met by identifying methods, training, staffing or equipment needed. Recommend alternatives and implement as approved.
    • Anticipate and react to changes in business or customer needs.
    • Ensure production schedules meet timely delivery of products and are coordinated with the needs of cross functional departments.
    • Schedule daily kitting.
    • Implement and oversee quality control measures and continuous improvement programs aimed at increasing efficiencies, reducing costs, increasing productivity and reducing setup times.
    • Oversee the preventative and regular maintenance and repair of machinery ensuring efficient and safe operations.
    • Ensure compliance with all health and safety programs and regulations as they relate to employee work practices and the shop environment.
    • Manage the machine shop budget including costs related to labor, materials and equipment.
    • Ensure customer requirements are fully understood and met; liaison between other departments and/or customers.
    • Oversee inventory level of tools, ensuring availability and minimizing waste.
    • Motivate staff to identify opportunities for improvements.
    • Review traveler making sure prints and routing are at the same rev levels.
    • Work toward constant reduction in non-conforming products.
    • Implement and operate flow manufacturing.
    • Implement /maintain ISO 9001 and other quality programs.
    • Other responsibilities may be added to fulfill the duties associated with the growing needs of the company and position.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree preferred (Mechanical Engineering a plus).
    • At least 8-10 years in a manufacturing supervisory position with progressive leadership responsibilities.
    • In-depth understanding of machining processes, CNC programming both manually and with Esprit, and machine tool operation. Manufacturing experience including CNC equipment, manual mills, lathes, CNC machining centers and other equipment.
    • Experience with machine scheduling in a small to medium batch manufacturing environment with extensive setups and prototyping.
    • Strong leadership, communication and team building skills.
    • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
    • Proficiency in relevant software, such as CAD/CAM and ERP systems.
    • Strong problem-solving and attention to detail skills.
    • Working knowledge of lean manufacturing.
    • G-code, Esprit and SolidWorks a plus.
