Public Relations Coordinator

Under direction, plans and directs the public relations or public education functions of a City department; and performs related duties as required
ESSENTIALDUTIES
·Prepare and review press releases and information being released publicly.
·Draft talking points for Department leadership.
·Serves as department spokesperson in responding to inquiries from media.
·Arrange interviews and highlights pieces for Department members.
·Prepares and edits remarks for department executives.
·Coordinates press conferences.
·Coordinates digital media, including social media and video, aligned with Departmental messages.
·Works closely with other City Departments and Agencies to coordinate and promote programs, initiatives and engagements.
·Prepares narrative and activity reports of communication, public information, and outreach activities.

Location: 3510 S. Michigan Av (Police Head Quarters)
Days : Monday through Friday
Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Salary: $80,628

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
·Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or a directly related field, PLUS at least five (5) years of experience in the development and implementation of public information programs, including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
·Five (5) years of professional news or communication experience
·Two (2) of supervisory experience
·Two (2) years of crisis communication experience

SELECTION REQUIREMENT : This position requires applicants to complete an interview and assessment. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected for hire.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
VETERANS PREFERENCE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of The United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. The preference granted under this section shall be in the form of preference in processing. Eligible candidates must have at least six months (180 days) of active duty documented. To receive the veteran's preference, candidates need to indicate whether they are a veteran by answering "YES" or "NO" to the question on the online application AND attach one of the following documents:
· DD214—Member Copy 4. The copy must include discharge status, which is found on the Member Copy A letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationery stating a minimum of 180 days of active duty service and character of service. · OR Active military personnel must attach a letter from their Commanding Officer on official stationery verifying a minimum of 180 days of Active Duty, and length of service, and must include the character of the service status in the Armed Forces of the United States.
