    Position Summary

    Pioneer Technical Services is seeking a Municipal Engineer specializing in municipal engineering to be based in one of our permanent office locations (Montana, Idaho, and Colorado) depending on the experience and work location needs of the applicant. The position requires experience in multiple phases of municipal engineering consultation (water, wastewater, site development, and subdivisions) including the ability to market new work, review and understand project design documents, prepare construction plans and specifications, perform planning level designs, writing grant applications to fund projects, support design teams through cost estimation, scope development, engineering analysis, and field inspection. The Municipal Engineer will perform the following specific duties:
    • Independently perform engineering for civil/municipal projects including planning level designs, alternative analysis, grant applications, preparation of design plans and specifications, and manage construction projects.
    • Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines within Pioneer, including structural, geotechnical, water resources, and environmental.
    • Design and manage the construction of municipal water and wastewater systems.
    • Conduct technical review and project management for engineering, deliverables, schedule, and invoices.
    • Manage and mentor junior engineering staff.
    • Prepare and review technical reports.
    • Develop scopes of work and budget estimates for municipal engineering projects.
    • Perform municipal related construction observation.
    • Assist with business development and proposal writing efforts focused on municipal related work opportunities.
    Skills & Abilities

    Experience: 5 to 10 years of experience in municipal engineering, analysis, and design is required.

    Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering.

    Registration: Professional Engineer (PE) registration in the state of Montana or have the ability to obtain registration in the state of Montana within 6 months of the date of hire.

    Computer Skills: Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products and have experience with Autodesk Civil 3D.

    Other Requirements: The ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team when solving complex, technical problems is essential. The job requires strong written skills, interpersonal skills, as well as flexibility and enthusiasm in performing a variety of tasks.

    Work Environment

    Our municipal engineering staff consists of 6 to 8 full-time engineers ranging in experience from Senior Project Manager to Staff level. The team values a healthy work-life balance, and we focus on working efficiently and collaboratively to ensure quality and productive work as well as quality time away from the office. The work environment is casual, friendly, respectful, and team oriented with daily peer interactions regarding work progress, client needs and project-specific technical issues. We strive to create an enjoyable work environment with support and opportunities for positive career growth. Most work will be conducted within an office setting, but there will be occasional fieldwork involved, primarily at projects sites. In 2023 we constructed a beautiful new building located in Helena, Montana which has the capacity for several additional staff.
