    As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Electrical (Electro-Mechanic), you will ensure elements of critical airport infrastructure and transportation systems are maintained and repaired.

    Heavy Equipment Mechanic Electrical (Electro-Mechanic)Serves in a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Shop in the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport.

    Troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, and performs preventive maintenance on critical airport infrastructure such as Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs), 400 Hz Aircraft Ground Power Units (GPUs), Aircraft Pre-Conditioned Air Units (PCAIRs), HVAC systems and electrical and electronic components of various types of mobile equipment and auxiliary generators including Mobile Lounges, Plane-Mates, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Apparatus, and Variable Message Boards/Signs (VMS).

    Maintains all critical airport transportation systems. Performs related functions.
    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIESPerforms a variety of duties to maintain electrical and electronic systems.

    Uses electrical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams to trace and troubleshoot faulty circuits, wiring, and to determine defective electrical components including breakers, capacitors, transistors, relays, diodes, and circuit boards.

    Uses test equipment including digital volt ohm meters (DVOMs), amp probes, digital storage oscilloscopes (DSOs), reactive and resistive load banks,Maintains, repairs, disassembles, adjusts, and reconditions heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and components such as compressors, condensers, pumps, receivers, evaporators, and thermostatic coils.

    In addition to common hand tools, uses manifold pressure gauges to determine proper operation and refrigerant levels.

    Uses soldering and brazing techniques to repair and install copper tubing and air-conditioning repairs in accordance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations on refrigerant handling and recovery.

    Uses operations and maintenance manuals, on-line information systems, and parts catalogs to identify original equipment components and assist in the identification of substitutions, if required.

    Performs mechanical repairs and adjustments as may be required in the performance of duties or as assigned.

    Responds to trouble calls to take immediate corrective action on malfunctioning equipment and vehicles including equipment carrying passengers or equipment that is actively servicing aircraft.

    Uses a computer for technical and administrative purposes; for example, fully documents activities in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), including corrective actions taken, labor hours, and parts used.

    Makes service calls to stalled or inoperative vehicles and equipment; performs on-site repairs.

    May research new suppliers or substitutions for unavailable parts; may fabricate part(s).May perform inspections of equipment and prepare labor, parts, and materials requirements for itemized estimates.

    Drives shop vehicles and equipment to various landside locations and within the Air Operations Area (AOA). Operates PBBs, personnel lifts, mobile lounges, Plane-Mates and other airport equipment as required.
    Performs other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS Four years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of one of the following:

    Ground Power Units and Pre-Conditioned Air units and electrical systems (up to 670V).ORTroubleshooting and repairing electrical components, devises, and systems (up to 670V), and skill in reading electrical schematics and diagrams.

    ORServicing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing industrial Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.

    Knowledge of electrical theory, the National Electric Code and the electronic principles used with various electronic/electric controls and ability to work safely on a variety of electrical systems and equipment.

    Journey level skill in analyzing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex interrelated electronic and electro-mechanical systems which require journey-level proficiency in HVAC, electronics, electrical, industrial controls, automatic door systems, and mechanical.

    Knowledge of, and skill in applying, electrical theory, heating and air-conditioning, and electronic and electro-mechanical systems as they relate to recognizing operating deficiencies and making appropriate repairs to heavy mechanical equipment.

    Knowledge of and skill in applying Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations related to the repair of HVAC systems.

    Skill in using tools-of-the-trade (e.g., manifold gauges, oscilloscope, and power supply testers, etc.)Ability to analyze data and information (diagrams, and schematics) to perform work.

    Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.
    Ability to speak and write effectively.
    Skill in using a computer, computerized work order system, and time and attendance systems.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience in the repair and maintenance of Passenger Boarding Bridges.
    Class B Commercial Driver's License.

    Certification as a Type I Refrigerant Technician by the EPA.Certification as a Type II Refrigerant Technician by the EPA.Certification as a Motor Vehicle Air Conditioner Technician by the EPA.Master Electrician License.

    Master HVAC License.

    EDUCATIONA high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIREDA state driver's license in good standing.

    Class B Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORSOperates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).May bend, stoop, crouch, and work in cramped positions; carries/moves objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

    Is subject to possible electrical shock, falls large mobile equipment, slips on oily flooring, and hazardous fumes and substances. May work for prolonged periods of time in noise levels in excess of 105db. Works around fast-moving traffic such as on the Dulles Access Highway.

    Uses personal protective uniforms, devices, and equipment, including steel-toed shoes, goggles, hearing protection, fire retardant uniforms, voltage rated insulated gloves and tools, fall protection harness, lanyard, and tie-offs to avoid, reduce, minimize or mitigate hazards.

    Is subject to holdover and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.
    Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
