    Utility Maintenance Worker


    Department:
    Public Works - Utility Maintenance


    Compensation:
    $23.85+/hour, DOQ


    Hours:
    40 per week/overtime eligible

    Position Objectives:


    Under the supervision of the Utility Maintenance Foreman, performs preventive maintenance and routine/emergency repairs of the City's water and wastewater systems and associated physical structures (pump-house, lift stations, water plants, etc.).


    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Essential Functions


    • Maintains and repairs water and sewage lines.
    • Monitors, maintains and repairs lift stations and components.
    • Inspects water and wastewater systems and identifies maintenance needs; clears sewage line blockages, repairs leaks and breaks.
    • Reads and records monthly water meter readings.
    • Connects and disconnects customer water services.
    • Collects water and sewer samples for lab testing.
    • Maintains sewer lagoon and operates discharge pump.
    • Maintains and services a variety of test equipment and hand and power tools.
    • Ensures that proper safety precautions are followed.
    • Operates a variety of City vehicles and power equipment.
    • Ensures scheduled preventative maintenance is performed on building systems.
    • Secures equipment upon completion of the work.
    • Maintains basic logs and records related to work performed; may use a mobile device to lookup or input data related to the work.
    • Responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis as assigned.
    • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
    • Promotes and supports the overall mission of the City by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Experience and/or Education:

    • High School Diploma, GED, and six months related experience or training
    • This position requires the possession of a valid drivers license.

    Desirable Training and Experience:

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

    • Methods and materials used in general building and above-ground and underground facilities maintenance and repair work.
    • Plumbing systems, pumps and controls.
    • Operation and capability of various trucks and light construction equipment.
    • Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools used in a variety of trade areas.
    • Shop mathematics.
    • Safety principles, practices and equipment related to the work.
    • Basic record keeping practices.
    • Basic IT systems and mobile device applications.
    • Materials, methods, and equipment used in road construction, maintenance and repair in specific areas of assignment.
    • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

    Required Skills:

    • Performing general maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew, in various areas, depending upon the project to which assigned.
    • Operating and maintaining specialized tools and equipment of a variety of mechanical, electrical and facilities maintenance trades.
    • Measuring and calculating angles, lengths and volumes.
    • Estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
    • Reading and interpreting manuals and specifications.
    • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
    • Recognizing potentially hazardous situations on the job site and taking appropriate action.
    • Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools related to the work.
    • Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
    • Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
    • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals contacted in the course of the work.

    Work is performed in an outdoor or indoor office setting.
