    (Student) Legal Assistant - Immigration Law & Justice Michigan

    POSITION PAY RANGE:
    $14.00, Hourly


    TARGET HIRING RANGE:

    Actual pay offered will be commensurate with candidate qualifications and experience, the type of role, pay equity and available funding.


    SUMMARY:
    The Immigration Law & Justice Michigan (ILJ-MI) Legal Assistant's role is to provide case support to Legal Representatives. The Legal Assistant screens potential clients, schedules appointments, and maintains client files. The Legal Assistant assists with communications with clients and helps with client meetings.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    On-site job training is provided


    • Return calls to potential clients and conduct Financial Eligibility Screening
    • Schedule appointments for clinics and all client meetings
    • Collect and process incoming mail
    • Maintain open client files and update the case management database
    • Ensure client communications and documents are interpreted and translated appropriately, using translators as needed
    • Assist Legal Representatives with client interviews and administrative tasks
    • Additional office administrative and community engagement responsibilities, as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Must be eligible for federal work study.

    Must be enrolled half time at Davenport University (6 credits as an undergraduate/3 credits as a graduate)

    Excellent communication skills in Spanish are required.

    Native Spanish speakers are highly encouraged to apply.

    Applicant must have strong organizational skills, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

    The ability to multi-task, think creatively, set priorities, work collaboratively under pressure, and meet deadlines are essential. General knowledge of immigration is preferred. Demonstrated cultural competency and capacity to work effectively with diverse, underrepresented, and/or vulnerable populations required. Occasional travel within Michigan may be required.


    Physical/Mental Demands Required:


    Primarily sedentary work requiring the ability to lift/carry a maximum of 25 pounds; physical requirements include frequent bending, standing, walking; continuous ability for speech communication and hearing to communicate with other ILJ-MI employees and the public, vision for reading, recording and interpreting information, and ability to sit for long hours at a time.

    Mental demands require continuous ability for both oral and written communication; frequent problem solving and concentration; and occasional analytical ability and creativity.

    Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computers and office equipment.
