    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience in food preparation or service activities in a commercial kitchen; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Essential Job Functions
    • Observe and test foods being cooked by tasting, smelling, using a probe thermometer, and piercing with a fork to determine correctly cooked.
    • Control proper usage and rotation of food.
    • Ensure food quality and appearance on buffet.
    • Alert Chef or direct supervisor to any food quality issues that could hurt culinary operations.
    • Maintain walk-in coolers and food storage areas daily.
    • Maintain a neat, clean, and sanitary workstation.
    • There will be limited times when weekend work will be expected.
    • The person selected must follow cleaning and sanitation procedures and other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
    • Serves appropriate portion sizes determined by Unit Management
    • Maintains availability of silverware, plates, cups, etc. for customer usage.
    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
    • Knowledge of methods of preparation and cooking of food in quantity lots.
    • Knowledge of the uses of various pieces of equipment, including but not limited to steamers, steam pots, fryers, grills, slicers, and ovens.
    • Ability to maintain high standards of personal cleanliness as well as food sanitation.
    • The job requires attention to detail, initiative, and decision-making capabilities.
    • Team player attitude and superior customer service skills are required.
    • Initiative to work beyond what is requested within the unit to achieve business goals of quality and service standards.
    • Knowledge of basic math and ability to portion serving sizes as needed.
    • Ability to interact effectively with coworkers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and interests.
    • Ability to work as a team member under rushed conditions without loss of efficiency or effectiveness.
    • Demonstrates engaging customer service to the Appalachian community.
    Preferred Qualifications

    2+ years of related front of house food service experience. ServSafe certification should be obtained within 1 year of employment.

    Work Schedule/Hours

    Campus Dining is a Sunday - Saturday, 6:00 am - 11:00 pm operation during the academic semesters. Operations are reduced during university breaks. Employees are scheduled two days off each week based on business need. Days off may not be consecutive days off.

    AM Lite BitesSunday- Saturday 6am- 3pm. Two days off each week based on business need.

    Employees may be required to work some flex hours to support the needs of the business and/or for special campus events. Schedules will be adjusted as needed to provide coverage in these cases.

    Physical Demands of Position

    Lifting items over 40 lbs. Stooping and bending to retrieve items from ovens, shelves, etc. Sweeping and mopping area each day. Scrubbing and cleaning of all equipment daily, standing on your feet for the entire 8-hour shift.

    Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.

    Program Knowledge/Record Administration: Performs a variety of recurring tasks and functions related to assigned processes and procedures. Manages and verifies files, records, and inventory. Compiles and organizes information from different sources to develop reports and data. Serves as resource to others.

    Customer Service: Anticipates, identifies and understands customer's service needs. Maintains good rapport with customers while assisting them with obtaining products. Check with customers and/or vendors to ensure products meet needs. Establishes and maintains good relationship with community, faculty, staff, students and /or vendors.     Mathematics: Applies working knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Working knowledge in receiving and disbursing cash, inventory/merchandise. Maintains, verifies, and coordinates related records from a variety of sources. Notifies supervisor of errors or problems with processes and procedures.

    Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
