Behavior Health Specialist - Children's Waiver Services

Provide services to youth and families in the foster care system. Openings are part-time in Dutchess and Orange county.

A Behavior Health Specialist may perform any of the following services:

Caregiver Family Supports & Services- A service meant to assist the family as an entity and to also serve as an advocate. The BHS (Behavioral Health Specialist) can assist in locating community resources, teach the parents how to locate their own community resources, coach parents in visits, enhance sibling visits through focusing on family interaction, and assist foster parents in providing enhanced structure in the home. As a family centered agency, the BHS works with both parents and foster parents to ensure shared parenting and consistency for the young person.
Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) A service focusing on the child's specific needs that enhances their ability to function effectively in the community. The BHS often focuses on struggles such as anger management, frustration tolerance, money management, communication and socialization.
Respite- The BHS for this service provides the caretakers with a break so that they can rest and function more effectively upon the child's return home. They also work to have the young person involved in some positive recreation in the community. In intensive cases, planned respite can be used as an overnight stay in another foster parent's home.
Prevocational Services- a service designed to help prepare youth 14 and older with job preparation and attainment.
Supportive Employment- A service designed to help youth 14 and older with job maintain employment. They are often a liaison between the employer and the youth should there be struggles. They can actually go on site with the client.
Community Self Advocacy Training & Supports- The BHS is at a Master's level in education and works toward the child's improved functioning in the school. They educate parents/caretakers on their rights in the school system and the special education system, as well as assist them in advocating for what they feel their youth needs. The BHS also collaborates with school professionals to better understand the child's specific behavioral/emotional/academic needs and develop plans, usually behavioral, that are tailored to the youth's needs.
Community Psychiatric Supports & Treatment (CPST) - The Master's level BHS focuses on what the crisis looks like for family and tries to help them learn what the issues that usually lead to crisis are. They develop a safety plan with the family and child and practice the plan, identifying resources and skills needed to prevent hospitalization and out-of-home placement.
Day Habilitation Services- A service that assists children with developmental disabilities with the self-help, socialization and adaptive skills necessary to successful functioning in the home and community. The BHS often assists with educating the caretakers on how to appropriately provide for the child as well. Additional Responsibilities Complete and submit service and session notes; participate in monthly supervision with LCSW if providing either PSR or CPST; attend and complete all required trainings, attend Treatment Team meetings as requested by Health Home Care Manager and/or BHS Supervisor; and assist in development of Treatment and or Service Plans.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates or Bachelor's degree in one of the approved DOH fields of study is required.
Minimum of 2 years' experience working with people with emotional/mental health disorders.
