    Description

    The University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy department of Pharmacy Practice & Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research (P-SHOR) has an opening for an Advanced Practice Pharmacist at the Springfield Hospital Center located in Sykesville, Maryland.


    The Springfield Hospital Center is operated by the Maryland Behavioral Health Administration and one of the oldest continually operating psychiatric facility in the United States.

    The hospital is a 220-bed psychiatric facility serving involuntarily committed and forensic patients.

    The Advanced Practice Pharmacist provides an advanced level of clinical services at the professional level focusing on medication use in patients and populations.

    Administers and/or supervises staff or drug utilization reporting and maintenance of accurate inventory. This position is responsible for compounding, packaging, labeling and dispensing medications and pharmaceuticals to patients.

    PRIMARY DUTIES

    • Provide an advanced level of clinical services at the professional level focusing on medication use in patients and populations.
    • Prepare medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders. Detect therapeutic incompatibilities. Dispense medication by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
    • Comply with state and federal drug laws as regulated by state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and food and drug administration by monitory unit inspections, maintain records of controlled substances, removing outdated and damaged drugs from pharmacy inventory;
    • Assist in development pharmacy programs according to policies and regulations.
    • Review, analyze and interpret patient information including health records, medical forms, laboratory work and records of past medication use.
    • Interact with prescribers and other health professionals regarding appropriate medication use, medication safety and pharmacotherapeutic monitoring. Dispense medications and observe patient reactions in conjunction with a clinical trial.
    • Review patient medication profiles, dispense and distribute medication.
    • Provide quality improvement services necessary for accreditation, certification or maintenance of permits and licenses.
    • Perform formulary reviews as assigned.
    • Actively monitors medication use in individual patients and populations.
    • Protect patients and staff by adhering to infection control protocols.
    • Coordinate activities with officials from state agencies and/or state appointed vendors to facilitate patient access to appropriate medication.
    • Document consultations and prescriber interactions, creates reports that summarize clinical activity and presents them to supervisors, reviewers and oversight panels.
    • Communicate with prescribers to obtain clear prescriptions by confirming the dosage and formulation to ensure patient's safety. Collaborate with physicians to discuss drug options and incompatibility issues with patient prescriptions. May attend rounds and treatment team meetings.
    • May precept pharmacy students and residents.
    • Track drug utilization within hospital analyze drug usage trends in large databases. Administer and/or supervise staff or drug utilization reporting and maintenance of accurate inventory
    • Perform administrative duties, such as organizing and directing technician's work flow, verify their preparation, labeling, order entries, and inspections, and coordination of drug utilization reporting.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:
    Bachelor's degree in pharmacy. Doctoral degree in pharmacy (Pharm.
    D) preferred.

    Experience:
    Two (2) years of experience in a pharmacy, OR

    One (1) year post-baccalaureate or post-doctoral residency plus one (1) year of experience, OR

    Two (2) years post-baccalaureate or post-doctoral residency, OR


    Certification in a relevant specialty by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties, such as psychiatry, or Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy.


    Preferred Experience:
    Direct patient management, collaborative drug therapy management or prescriptive authority experience preferred.


    Supervisory Experience:
    N/A.


    Certification/Licensure:
    Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) or Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) or eligibility preferred.

    HIRING RANGE:
    $121,000 - $141,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience).
