    Position Overview

    Under the direction of the Chief of Schools, the Director of Teaching and Learning will be responsible for aligning the Maya Angelou School network's curriculum with Common Core academic standards, facilitating the curriculum review process, leading the Maya Angelou School network's staff development program, and administering the Maya Angelou School network's response to academic achievement and interventions.

    The Director of Teaching and Learning will provide leadership and guidance to the Maya Angelou School network by ensuring measurable academic improvement providing professional development and leadership for teachers and teacher leaders.

    The Director of Teaching and Learning provides overall leadership and oversight of the implementation of our comprehensive 7-12 and adult education instructional programs.

    The individual in this role will most notably support improved student learning.

    This individual should be able to collaborate with others to ensure that the instructional model and academic processes are integrated and aligned, exhibit sound management, maintain student engagement, maximize opportunities for increased student achievement, provide benefits for all students and instructional staff members, and contribute to the overall mission and goals for Maya Angelou Public Schools.


    Requirements:
    Responsibilities
    Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

    Professional Development
    Plan and direct the Maya Angelou Schools network licensing and certification professional development program
    Direct and manage a Development Committee to inform the selection of appropriate professional training programs and materials for instructional staff
    Research, select, and facilitate appropriate professional training for all sites, departments, and/or grade levels to implement curriculum content and pedagogical practices successfully
    Research, select, and facilitate appropriate professional training for all sites, departments, and/or grade levels on topics deemed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the Maya Angelou Schools network
    Coordinate training for the whole of Maya Angelou Schools network staff to strengthen school improvement efforts and processes as they relate to professional development
    Curriculum Development
    Oversee and implement instructional programs and related services for grades 7-12 and identified Adult Education programming
    Meet identified objectives in the strategic plan by developing, implementing, evaluating, and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines
    Plan and direct Maya Angelou Schools network high-quality and effective teaching strategies in alignment with Common Core and state standards
    Schedule, organize, audit, and facilitate curriculum development and overview process, including establishing overview teams and the research/selection of instructional materials
    Plan and direct the acquisition of instructional resources to support the development and enhancement of the Maya Angelou Schools network curriculum, which includes designating resources to support necessary curriculum writing by licensed teachers
    Review and approve the work of curriculum overview teams to ensure high-quality curriculum and alignment with Maya Angelou Schools network expectations and State standards
    Support instructional staff during the implementation of new curriculum material
    Instructional Quality and Delivery
    Review and implement best practices for institutional evaluation processes and procedures, with the support of Human Resources and the Chief of Schools
    Oversee and launch the instructional evaluation cycle and serve as a consulting support to principals and school leaders during the process
    Conduct instructional staff

    Remains current with research and best practices curriculum, staff development, and evaluation through professional readings, training, workshop attendance, etc.
    Partner with the Chief of Schools to coordinate and lead all school improvement efforts
    Coordinate the Teacher Leadership Program
    Plan and deliver PreK-12 professional development activities
    Participate in multi-tiered system of support (MTSS/SST) related

    training/professional

    development
    Teacher Support
    Coordinate the Maya Angelou School Network's response to academic intervention.
    Establishes and implements Research Triangle Institute (RTI) practices across the Maya Angelou Schools network
    Develop programming and serve as the Maya Angelou Schools network's beginning teachers and mentor contact
    Provide training to all new teachers in the Maya Angelou Schools network through years 1, 2, and 3 of their tenure
    Develop framework, facilitate, and support the continuous improvement of Professional Learning Communities
    Support Professional Learning Communities by developing materials to identify essential learnings and create formative assessments to determine student progress toward established benchmarks
    Supports Professional Learning Communities by providing appropriate professional development and through supervision of the Maya Angelou Schools network response to Intervention implementation
    Qualifications
    Master's degree in education and leadership or related field (required)
    Five (5) years of experience teaching
    Five (5) years of experience in management, coaching, and staff development roles, with a focus on teachers and school leadership
    Experience working with opportunity youth
    Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies
    Understanding of best practices in curriculum and instruction
    Working knowledge of Common Core standards and associated assessments and interventions
