- Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in an environmental field and/or program. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental, agricultural or natural sciences/resources.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with others.
- Ability or experience in lead worker or supervisory role.
- Experience or ability in preparing and writing reports and correspondence.
- Industrial background or inspection experience.
- Ability to work well with a diverse group of people.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
- Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
- Incumbent must obtain OSHA 40-hour Hazwoper training and remain certified with annual refresher training for hazardous site work.
- Incumbent must pass a comprehensive baseline physical that demonstrates the ability to utilize personal protective equipment.

The position (K
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has an Environmental Compliance/Regulatory Specialist opening in Salina. This Waste Program position is in the Salina District office, north central district includes 17 counties. Perform inspections of solid waste landfills and facilities that generate hazardous waste. Investigate complaints. Research and decision-making skills utilized in completing work. Document field findings in written reports and work to ensure environmental compliance is achieved.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Performs inspections and evaluations of complex solid and hazardous waste facilities to determine compliance with federal and state environmental statutes and regulations.
Compiles and analyzes inspection and technical data collected during inspections, interprets findings, and prepares inspection or other technical reports, correspondence, and support documentation as needed.
Submit reports through the district supervisor within 30 calendar days of initial inspection. Provide facility with inspection results upon completion of inspection or in writing within 7 calendar days. Where appropriate, telephonic notification of inspection results may be used. Reviews corrective action plans and interprets facility actions to return to compliance. Track compliance efforts by facilities and follow-up corrective actions within 10 calendar days of compliance deadlines.When facilities fail to come into compliance after deadline, determines when necessary to refer to the district supervisor for consideration.
Completes BWM training requirements for solid and hazardous waste. Obtain OSHA 40-hour training and remain certified with annual refresher training for hazardous site work.Performs special investigations of citizen complaints regarding solid and hazardous wastes. Prepare investigation reports within 10 calendar days of responding to complaint. Provide appropriate follow-up to insure correction of any violations of federal or state regulations.
