    Specific vacancies may include both full and part time, continuing and non-continuing positions. Full time School Nurse positions are 7.75 hours per day for 186 days for new employees. In addition, School Nurses receive a yearly stipend up to $1,000 plus a supplemental contract for 10 additional days.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate Certificate as a School Nurse, valid Washington State RN license and current CPR certification.


    Preferred Requirements:

    Successful and recent experience as a nurse in a school setting, pediatric experience and student cultural and economic diversity experience.

    Annual salary listed is for the school year.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Provide for the health, wellness and safety of students through health education, direct service to students, staff and student trainings, and collaboration with student families, Public Health, school staff, and medical/dental/community resources and liaisons.


    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Identify students having acute and chronic health conditions that affect educational performance.
    • Provide nursing assessments for students being evaluated for possible Special Education placement.
    • Provide individual health care plans and/or 504 plans for students as needed with chronic and acute health conditions and disabilities and student needing treatments and medications.
    • Provide health education and guidance for students, parents and school staff to promote wellness.
    • Serve as liaison between healthcare providers and the school staff by evaluating and interpreting health information and by making appropriate referrals for health care, vision, and dental care.
    • Serve as liaison between the schools and the State/County Health Departments for the control of communicable diseases within the school setting.
    • Establish procedures, supervise, provide training and assist implementation of the following: immunization compliance, medication administration, medical and/or nursing treatments, health room care of sick and injured students, field trip preparation (including staff medication training) and clothing and medical assist programs.
    • Act as consultant, resource and teacher of health education and current health information.
    • Provide annual staff training including but not limited to Infection Control and Blood Borne Pathogens, medical confidentiality and use of Special Needs Consent forms, medication administration, asthma, anaphylaxis, and diabetes. Train and supervise health room paraeducators.
    • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment for the purpose of promoting effective student behavior and success.
    • Communicate and collaborate with parents and school community for the purpose of fostering student success and achievement, and meeting special education laws and policies.
    • Participate in and facilitate various meetings for the purpose of addressing student goals and needs, and to meet laws and policies. Engage in continuing education studies which insures professional growth.
    • Maintain and process accurate records/documents as required by state and federal regulations and district policy.
    • Direct the work of assigned classified staff.
    • Fulfill legal responsibilities, implement, and comply with federal and state laws, district policies and other guiding principles, and State Code of Professional Conduct.
    • Perform other duties of similar scope and function.
    • Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract.
    JOB REQUIREMENTS; MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:


    • Knowledge of applicable Washington State and federal rules and regulations.
    • Knowledge of subject matter/course content relevant to assignment.
    • Knowledge and understanding of child development.
    • Knowledge of communicable diseases and immunization requirements.
    • Knowledge of health and wellness issues including but not limited to nutrition, exercise, good health habits, and human growth and development.
    • Ability to care for acute and chronic health conditions, and to assess student medical needs.
    • Ability to educate others about health requirements and public health implications.
    • Ability to interact and collaborate positively and effectively with parents, students, staff and administrators.
    • Ability to build an environment of trust, teamwork and effective communication.
    • Skills and ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with diverse people, including racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
    • Ability to demonstrate cultural competencies.
    • Ability to identify and address personal, cultural, and institutional bias.
    • Skills and abilities in organization, time management, and recordkeeping.
    • Ability to operate technology devices and specific software programs.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
    • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate Certificate as a School Nurse.
    • Valid Washington State RN license and current CPR certification.
    • Student cultural and economic diversity experience, preferred.

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Successful and recent experience as a nurse in a school setting.
    • Pediatric experience.
    • Experience working directly with people from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and socioeconomic backgrounds, preferred.
