    Position Summary

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Mexico invites applications for the position of Department Chair, with a start in the Summer of 2024. We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and visionary leader who can guide the department to a higher level of excellence. The successful candidate is expected to develop and implement a strategic vision for the department that fosters innovation and growth in both research and education, aligning with the plans of and . The Chair will be required to lead the department with transparency, collegiality, and a dedicated commitment to diversity. A . in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required with expertise in areas, such as (but not limited to) renewable energy, aerospace engineering, intelligent manufacturing, cyber-physical systems, mechatronics, fluid, thermal, solid mechanics, and bioengineering.

    The is committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education offering BS (ABET accredited), MS, and PhD degree programs. A team of 15 full-time faculty, several research and part-time faculty, three technical staff, and five professional staff support the activities of over 500 undergraduate students and more than 100 graduate students.

    Our research, educational, and outreach programs are enhanced through participation in and on campus and through strong ties and collaborations with the neighboring national laboratories (, , and ). The UNM also provides an entrepreneurial to translate intellectual property to business.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications: The minimum qualifications must be consistent with Higher Learning Commission standards and compliant with the faculty hiring guidelines.

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required with expertise in areas, such as (but not limited to) renewable energy, aerospace engineering, intelligent manufacturing, cyber-physical systems, mechatronics, fluid, thermal, solid mechanics and bioengineering.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recognized stature in mechanical engineering
  • Outstanding record in funded research, teaching, and service commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to collaborative leadership
  • Strong track record of impactful research and excellence in teaching
  • Prior administrative experience is desirable
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
