    Description

    HOURS:
    Variable. On call every 4-6 weekends.


    JOB SUMMARY:
    Assesses, recommends, and implements strategies for nutritional care for inpatients and outpatients.


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Training:

    Completion of an accredited program approved by the American Dietetic Association and subsequent successful completion of the exam to obtain Registered Dietitian status.


    Experience:
    At least two years of clinical experience is preferred.

    License/Registration:

    Registered Dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Certified Dietitian with the State of Washington, Health Professionals Quality Assurance Division.

    Washington State Food Handlers Permit is required within 30 days of hire. Certified Diabetic Educator (CDE) certification is preferred.

    Population Served:
    Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Young Adult, Middle Age, and Elderly.



    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Planning and Prioritizing

    Budgets time efficiently to accomplish the duties of the position and works on new ideas.

    Information Gathering

    Screens inpatients for nutritional risk.

    Decision-Making

    Seeks input from affected parties in the process of decision making. Assesses the nutritional status and needs of inpatients and outpatients, as appropriate.

    Discerns the possible causes for the nutrition problems of patients and documents the nutrition diagnostic statement in the PES format.

    Formulates and implements a nutrition plan of action for patients that is focused on the etiology of the problem and known to be effective, based on best current knowledge and evidence.

    Communication

    Collaborates with the Nutrition Therapy Director in all areas of medical nutrition therapy. Demonstrates behaviors that promote positive customer relations. Participates in the evaluation process for fellow employees. Communicates with other employees in an open and respectful manner. Documents nutritional progress in the patient medical records. If outpatient, sends assessment and plan to referring MD.

    Technical Proficiency

    Demonstrates accurate knowledge of age appropriate, nutrition care therapies and education. Plans and writes House Diets for patients with specific nutritional considerations. Identifies food and drug interactions and provides patient education in collaboration with pharmacy and nursing. Applies state and JCAHO standards of nutritional care in the daily delivery of services. Applies knowledge and current research information to the delivery of optimal nutrition care.

    Teamwork

    Recommends and implements strategies for nutritional care in collaboration with other healthcare providers. Promotes positive staff interpersonal relationships. Assumes accountability for own actions. Participates in department meetings and other interdisciplinary teams, as appropriate.

    Quality

    Assists with the quality assurance activities of the department and the hospital, especially as related to medical nutrition therapy.

    Outcomes


    Measures and evaluates the nutritional progress of patients by comparing current findings with previous status, intervention goals, and/or reference standards.

    Personal Education

    Participates in continuing departmental and hospital-wide education programs.

    Maintains registration in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics by adopting a plan of ongoing, professional development and participation in learning activities to address the plan.

    Seeks to stay abreast of current medical nutrition therapy trends.

    Work Effectiveness

    Involves fellow employees in his/her own personal performance evaluation to assess areas for improvement and excellence.

    Reliability

    Comes to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality. Performs the functions of the position without daily supervision.

    Education of Others

    In collaboration with and as requested by the Nutrition Therapy Director;

    Plans and presents nutrition in-services to department employees, as pertains to their work,

    Provides nutrition education to other healthcare providers, patients and/or patient support systems,

    Develops and teaches community nutrition classes as needed, and

    Develops and coordinates nutrition education material.

    NON-

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Inspects meals served for compliance with prescribed diets. Performs other non-essential functions as requested.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    Sitting: 75%


    Standing/Walking:
    25%.

    Occasional lifting/carrying of supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.

    Occasional climbing of stairs to reach other levels of the building.

    Frequent reaching/handling/fingering to obtain supplies, write reports, use computer, and telephone.

    Constant talking/hearing/seeing to perform patient care and teaching.


    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    Location:
    Inside.

    Occasional exposure to extremes of cold when working in the kitchen freezer.

    Minimal risk of injury due to proximity of moving parts on computer printer, typewriter, and copier.

    Minimal exposure to biohazardous materials.


    Pay Range:
    $28.71-$43.77 Hourly
