Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time SOREC Hemp Summer 2024 Student Technical Assistant position for the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

A part-time position is available at Oregon State University, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center in Central Point, OR. The areas related with this position include hemp integrated pest management (entomology), hemp agronomy and hemp outreach activities.

The incumbent will provide technical research support for the hemp research and Extension program at the Southern Oregon Research & Extension Center in Central Point, OR. Duties will include assisting a graduate student and principal investigator (PI) in insect rearing, sample processing, field data collection and plot maintenance. Position Duties

Duties include the technical and extension education assistances in a hemp program.

Technical assistance includes, but are not limited to rearing of insect pests and beneficials collected from fields; maintenance of hemp research plots; data collections from field research plots and biological control lab and field studies; data entry and management.

The applicant will perform routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of research.

Extension education assistance includes the preparation of hemp extension outreach materials such as newsletter, video, field day event, handouts.

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standardHigh School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling programUndergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per termUndergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per termGraduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

Ability to work as part of a team and be able to handle independent project tasks

Strong organizational and communication skills

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience working independently in laboratory and field settings

Working knowledge in entomology, ecology, plant science and/or environmental science

Experience working in an agricultural setting

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position requires you to work outdoors in all types of weather for several hours with exposure to dust and pollen.

The position will work part of the time in a lab setting requiring you to sit for several hours.

Typically, this position will work variable hours M-F. Occasionally you may be required to work outside of the normal work week and hours.

Anticipated hours per week: 20 hours.

The position term is subject to extension based on research needs and work performance.
