    Summary

As a Research Aerospace Engineer, AST, Fluid Mechanics in the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division (NAS) at Ames Research Center, you will leverage cutting-edge physics-based modeling methods to enhance capabilities within the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver framework developed in-house. You will lead efforts to predict next-generation flight vehicle characteristics using high-fidelity CFD methods to reduce program cost and ensure mission safety and success.

    Duties

    • Develop an understanding of the physics of flow phenomena, and physical models of these phenomena to improve the methodology for calculating the flow of fluids through or about aircraft, spacecraft, entry vehicles, etc., and their components.
    • Conduct studies on flight vehicles utilizing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods, including major systems components and airborne equipment encompassed in the structure for safety, suitability and effectiveness in operation.
    • Spearhead and lead the development and application of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) capabilities within a CFD framework to improve the predictive capability of high-speed parachute inflation dynamics.
    • Leverage scale-resolving simulation methods to model and evaluate next-generation spacecraft technologies, which includes characterization of launch, ascent, and re-entry vehicle dynamics and characterization.
    • Perform high-fidelity computational simulations to assess high-speed parachute inflation dynamics and validate against experimental data.
    • Mentor and train junior and mid-level research aerospace engineers to apply and further enhance Cartesian-based CFD capabilities.
    • Document analysis results through technical reports and communicates findings with program stakeholders through publications and periodic briefings.
    • Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Champion NASA's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility to create an environment that promotes a commitment to safety, integrity, and teamwork.
