- MS in marine science, biology, biochemistry or similar discipline or combination with additional experience (1-2 years) in a research environment.
- Demonstrated experience using radioisotopes in a research laboratory.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct and assist in the development of complex research activities for the development of biological-based toxin detection methods using sound research design principles.
- Experience working with highly toxic agents, including the ability to perform calculations to prepare solutions and standard reference materials.
- Proficient in the use of instrument software for data collection and scientific software for data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability/skills in analysis, organization, and communication of scientific data.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize daily activities to meet competing deadlines.
- Ability to work individually and as part of a team, with strong interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills.
- Able to move about a chemistry lab and complete bench-level tasks safely and efficiently, including the ability to lift 35 lbs.
- Assists in the development and validation of existing and new algal toxin detection platforms (ELISA, RBA, SPR).
- Organizes and prepares samples for in house and external validation studies.
- Develops and improves standard operating procedures for algal toxin testing in support of the dissemination of research products to end users.
- Operates, troubleshoots, and maintains both general and specialized laboratory equipment.
- Collects, analyzes, and reports on experimental data to research scientists.
- Conducts training workshops for the application of NCCOS developed HAB toxin detection products.
- Prepares and presents research findings in a variety of formats.

Job DescriptionThe Environmental Scientist specializes in the laboratory-based detection of toxins produced by harmful algae and cyanobacteria. They support the advancement of NCCOS' Stressor Detection & Impacts (SDI) strategic science objectives in the development of detection tools and the monitoring of toxins produced by harmful algal blooms.

Responsibilities:
CSS is predominantly a Federal Contractor and is subject to following the terms of Executive Orders.
