    Summary

    The Durham VA Medical Center in Durham, NC is recruiting for a full-time Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician - Afternoon Shift. They are responsible for performing difficult specialized tasks in a variety of laboratory disciplines, such as microbiology, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunohematology (blood banking), parasitology, serology, urinalysis, and ancillary testing.

    Work Schedule : Monday-Friday 3:00 PM- 11:30 PM rotating weekends and holidays.

    Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
    Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
    Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
    Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

    Duties:

    Duties and responsibilities may include any combination of those found at the GS-8 grade level; however, individuals in these assignments work under closer supervision and are not given the freedom of action typically found at the higher level. The medical laboratory technician rotates with other medical laboratory technicians and generalists on a regular basis through the above-mentioned areas. He/She also works off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need. The duties and responsibilities of the Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician include but are not limited to the following:
  • Perform the full range of duties in the laboratory, from sample collection to evaluating and communicating high complexity test results. MLTs perform day-to-day operations in the laboratory with minimal technical supervision while ensuring testing accuracy and quality of proper patient care.

  • Processing techniques such as centrifugation, aliquoting, storage and packaging (considering stability factors), and they accurately label and sort patient specimens.
  • Operate and maintains all instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver precise, timely and accurate laboratory results when analyzing body fluids such as blood, urine and tissue samples.
  • Analyze laboratory findings and issue necessary reports.
  • Communicates results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with supervisors, pathologists and other medical professionals as needed.
  • Coordinates with all other clinical departments, to include medicine, surgery, dialysis, dermatology, to complete order entry and accessioning of test orders in the computer, correcting duplications or entry errors.
  • Performs phlebotomy using appropriate and established venipuncture techniques and universal precautions, being careful to avoid areas close to nerve bundles and arteries.
  • Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement with immediate or general supervision.
  • Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace with immediate or general supervision.
  • Assists in the instruction and training of new employees and students and in the laboratory's in-service/continuing education program.
