This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.
A major threat to our Nation's security is the uncontrolled outbreak of infectious disease.
Stopping the spread of disease-from naturally occurring or manmade threats-requires an in-depth understanding of pathogens, how they work, the host response to pathogens, as well as advanced methods for detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
The Genomics and Bioanalytics Group (B-GEN) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) tackles these challenges using an array of sophisticated approaches, including advanced genomics and bioinformatics.
Software Developer 1 $69, $110,300.00The bioinformatics team in B-GEN develops and maintains a collection of advanced bioinformatics software suites, including the EDGE Bioinformatics ). We also develop and support automated data processing for the National Microbiome Data Collaborative ) and various biosurveillance projects for public health and national security purposes. We are looking for multiple motivated and talented bioinformatics software developers at different levels to join our team.
As a bioinformatics Software Developer 1 you will maintain our current bioinformatics software portfolio and provide operational support, including software deployment to local and remote environment, develop software documentations and training materials, and add new functionalities to existing workflows.
You will collaborate with bioinformatics scientists, system administrators, and data managers, to implement solutions to some of the most challenging bioinformatics problems.
Software Developer 2 $83, $136,600.00In addition to what was outlined at the Software Developer 1, at this level we are inviting experienced scientific software developers with proven record in large scale omics data processing capability development.
Experience in software life cycle management, agile software development, and software architecture are expected.It is also expected for this person to mentor junior team members and students and be recognized as the expert in at least one areas by other team members.
What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:
Two or more years of experience in developing Python or R code for scientific computing.
Experience in developing bioinformatics software tools for large-scale data processing in Linux.
Experience in workflow managers such as Cromwell and Nextflow
Familiarity with best software engineering practices, including source code control in a team environment.
Exposure to cloud-based solutions for omics data analysis, utilizing technologies such as Spark and software containers.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful integration of software tools into bioinformatics pipelines.
Be able to stay up to date with the latest advancements in bioinformatics software
A record of scientific publications and presentations.
Familiarity in basic biological concepts
Provide technical support and training to users of our tools.
Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 2:
Two or more years of work experience after graduate school, ideally including experience in a software architect role or as a lead software engineer
Two or more years of experience in RESTful API development
Experience with data ETL process
Experience with cloud computing technologies such as AWS
Experience in code development for high performance computing
Five or more experience in code development in Linux environment
Education/Experience at lower level:
Position requires a bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics or Computer Science and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level:
Position requires a bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a highly related computational degree and 5years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
A master's degree in bioinformatics or computer science with a bachelor's degree in computer science
A proven track record of bioinformatics software development
Work Location:
The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of
continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to
