    Summary



    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.



    Duties


    The Physical Therapist at the Full Performance level provides Physical Therapy care to patients/clients who have impairments, functional limitations, disabilities or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease, or other causes. As a Licensed Independent Practitioner, the Physical Therapist at this level embraces evidence-based practice standards in diagnosis, examination, management, intervention, treatment, and outcome measures. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:



    Clinical Duties:

  • Reviews patient medical records to assess for appropriateness of PT intervention, noting any potential risks or contraindications to treatment and to assist in guiding the evaluation process.
  • Performs comprehensive evaluations with using standard and nonstandard methods for evaluating complex patients with an emphasis on assessing a patients' medical status.
  • Performs examinations and evaluations of patients who have or may develop impairments, activity limitations, and participations restrictions related to conditions of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or integumentary systems while considering the effects attributable to unique personal and environmental factors.
  • Addresses rehabilitation potential, behavior, motor skills and psychosocial development at an age-appropriate level.
  • Develops appropriate treatment plans and goals with emphasis on acute and chronic medical rehabilitation.
  • Performs a full range of PT treatment procedures, modifying the treatment according to the patient's response to PT intervention.
  • Recognizes adverse reactions to treatment and initiates effective action immediately.
  • Modifies treatment plan according to patient response to best meet established goals.
  • Documents progression and/or modifications according to Departmental and Medical Center Standards.
  • Works effectively with treatment team members and other health care providers in coordinating the patient's total care.
  • Ensures appropriate patient referrals and discharge planning in accordance with the Physical Therapy and Medical Center staff.
  • Measures, fits and instructs patients for the use of complex adaptive equipment and assistive devices.
  • Justifies medical need for all adaptive equipment and assistive device requests.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the specialty field and assists lower grade therapists with unusual/complex treatment problems and works with them on solutions.
  • Interprets findings from examination, diagnostic studies/medical tests, drug evaluation, select appropriate clinical tests and measures, and integrate findings in to the physical therapy plan of care.
  • Establishes a diagnosis within the scope of physical therapy and identifies the appropriate intervention to treat and/or refer to another provider for further consolation when needed.
  • Considers age specific needs of the patient when conducting evaluations, planning, and conducting treatment programs.
  • Educational Duties:

  • Investigates current concepts and scientific principles in Physical Therapy practice through literature reviews, study of current research, clinical practice, assisting in research trials, and through attendance at continuing education courses and conferences.
  • Provides in-services and clinical training programs in the specialty area to nursing personnel, physicians, and allied health professionals. Serves as a mentor to other PT staff.
  • Supervises and trains students and develops student training program.
  • Administrative Duties:

  • Maintains and submits in a timely manner productivity and other required reports.
  • Understands and adheres to Rehabilitation Section's policies and procedures as outlined in section manual.
  • Participates in PT quality improvement program development and regularly monitors important aspects of patient care.
  • Assists in problem solving for administrative issues between PT department and the Inpatient Medical Service.
  • Participates in all PT and PM&R staff meetings.
