About the Department

The Pediatric Surgical Subspecialty group at the University of Chicago performs more than 4,000 operations each year for a variety of childhood diseases.

The clinical faculty offers world-renowned expertise in all aspects of pediatric surgical care with complete, well-balanced programs in General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Urology.

The hallmark of the Pediatric General Surgery program is an AGCME-accredited, two-year fellowship training program in Pediatric General Surgery with a clinical emphasis on minimally invasive surgery (MIS), which results in less pain, tissue damage and scarring in children, as well as faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.

The section produces numerous articles for peer reviewed journals on minimally invasive surgery in children, as well as presents cutting-edge techniques at national meetings.

In addition to our unique minimally invasive program, the general surgery group performs traditional pediatric surgical procedures ranging in complexity form high index neonatal surgery to routine hernia surgery.

The group also manages the largest and busiest Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program in the Chicago area.
Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse in the Section of Pediatric Surgery works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to patients under the care of the University of Chicago Medicine.

This position will support our Pediatric Surgery inpatient team.
Responsibilities
Rounds on patients daily with the surgical residents, fellows, and attending.

Collaborates with other services in the multidisciplinary care of patients including case management, PT/OT, Social work, Child Life and other specialty services.

Participates in academic activities including weekly conferences with the whole surgical team.

Participates in clinical research trials including obtaining consents and administering questionnaires.

Performs procedures as outlined in privileges including gastrostomy tube changes and troubleshooting, repair of central lines, supernumerary digit removals, anal dilations, rectal irrigations, chemical cautery of tissues, incision and drainage of abscesses, wound and ostomy care.

Attends clinics independently to evaluate patients.

Participates in management decisions.

Coordinates follow-up care, including imaging/testing, consultations, or surgery for discharged patients.

Orders and interprets test results.

Notifies patients of test results and management plans.

Patients education regarding pre-operative preparation, post-operative care.

Works with nurse to address patient inquires via email, EPIC, or phone.

Obtains medical histories and performs physical assessments.

Travels to offsite practices as necessary.

Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.

Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications


Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

  Certifications:Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required.

Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).

Preferred Qualifications


Education:
An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing.


Experience:
Two or more years of clinical experience in Pediatric Surgery.

Past experience working in the ICU.

Licenses and

Certifications:
Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
