Description
Kelp Restoration from the Inside Out:
Abolition Ecologies Researcher
Job title:
Abolition Ecologies Researcher
Location:
Eureka/Arcata CA
Terms:
Part Time - 6 hours per week (October '24-October '25)
Salary/rate:
$30/hr
Who can apply:
This position is available to formerly incarcerated people interested in: community building, decarceration, ecological restoration, cooperative development, aquaponics farming, and/or BIPOC food sovereignty.
About us:
Earth Equity is a collaboration between incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and other Environmental Justice practitioners. Co-created with incarcerated people at San Quentin State Prison in 2022, Earth Equity's mission is to reduce recidivism; eliminate unjust food practices in prisons, jails, and fence-line communities; and nurture system-impacted people. We do this by creating programs which provide ecological education and job skills training to incarcerated people, supporting people in reentry, and caring for the communities and ecosystems to which they return.
About the role:
Kelp Restoration from the Inside Out (KRIO) uplifts and strengthens relationships between brilliant people and resilient ecosystems. As kelp forests offer lessons in abolition and mutual aid, system- impacted people bring immense creativity, resourcefulness, and expertise as researchers, organisers, care workers, and leaders in Environmental Justice.
KRIO is hiring four formerly incarcerated researchers to answer the question: Is a reentry support and ocean care cooperative needed and wanted in Humboldt County? Researchers will attend monthly workshops and weekly planning meetings with partners in cooperative development, kelp restoration, and reentry to evaluate if a co-op of this nature could: create pathways to personal healing, business ownership, and meaningful work for formerly incarcerated people; contribute to BIPOC food sovereignty and kelp restoration; create a hub for Environmental Justice in our community.
