    Description:
    The department chair serves as the instructional leader and administrative liaison of their department. The department chair leads curriculum development and alignment, supports and mentors department staff, manages instructional resources, and collaborates with administration to improve student learning outcomes. Key responsibilities include facilitating department meetings, evaluating departmental staff, analyzing student performance data to inform instructional decisions, coordinating curriculum alignment with departmentally designed critical learning standards, developing a departmental budget, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Department chairs carry a teaching load as prescribed by the terms of the teacher contract.

    Responsibilities May Include:

    • Report to the building principal.
    • Be a member of the school leadership team.
    • Be a member of the district curriculum committee.
    • Initiate and facilitate curriculum development in the department.
    • Regularly and systematically conduct teacher evaluations
    • Collaborate with the principal and curriculum committee on revisions of course objectives and assessments, selection of instructional materials, and all other instructional issues.
    • Assign teachers to classes based on certifications and qualifications.
    • Assist in providing appropriate staff development programs for department members.
    • Oversee testing and assessment programs in the department.
    • Maintain accurate supply and equipment inventories.
    • Prepare the annual department budget.
    • Assist the principal in the selection of professional staff.
    • Coordinate technology assistance for department members.
    • Review grade distribution reports.
    • Assist in the orientation of new staff in the department.
    • Assist and be a resource for staff in developing fair academic and behavioral procedures for students.
    • Serve as a resource for the principal in matters pertaining to staff, such as: the quality of instruction, level of cooperation, student discipline, and overall academic policy within the department.
    • Oversee departmental Professional Learning Teams
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

    Qualifications:
    Candidates must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience; possess an endorsement in general administrative, teacher leadership, or principal leadership; or be currently enrolled in a principal preparation or teacher leadership program. Successful candidates must complete the PERA-mandated teacher evaluation training by the start date and are expected to complete their teacher leadership or principal preparation coursework within two years, if applicable.

    Salary and benefits established by the agreement between the Board of Education and the District 211 Teacher's Union.
