    Job Responsibilities

    Nurses assigned to C.M. Tucker - Nursing Care Center are currently eligible for a 20% supplemental pay along with their base salary as long as they remain an employee with C.M. Tucker - Nursing Care Center.

    With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

    This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, C. M. Tucker Nursing Care Center, Stone, 2200 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29203.

    As the Permanent Charge Nurse, you will supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of a unit in accordance with Federal, State, and Facility standards, guidelines, and regulations that governs the facility. Ensures the highest degree of quality care is maintained by having skills to complete paraprofessional nursing tasks. Directs and supervises LPNs and CNAs nursing care under the auspices of a Registered Nurse.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Supervises the nursing care of the unit by daily observation and evaluation of resident care. Monitors environment to ensure compliance with OBRA, OSHA, DHEC, VA and The Joint Commission standards, and assists with the coordination and implementation of corrective action plans as needed.
    • Makes frequent safety and clinical rounds to observe and evaluate nursing care to ensure nursing standards and facility policies are maintained while providing for the residents' individual needs. Utilizes proactive interventions and identifies Performance Improvement opportunities to promote quality nursing care.
    • Assists in the coordination and delegation of nursing duties of License Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Certified Nursing Assistances (CNAs) by preparing effective assignments according to staff abilities, clinical knowledge and experience. Competently and complete staff evaluations according to the SCDMH EPMS system. Provides employee counseling and disciplinary actions when warranted according to SCDMH Disciplinary Standards.
    • Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team. Assists in the resident care planning process to ensure the plan of care is an individualized plan of care for each resident. Makes ongoing nursing observations and updates plan of care as necessary. Assists in the establishment of programs, interventions, and goals to promote optimum comfort, rest, and rehabilitative nursing care for residents to maintain the highest functional level to participate in AOL care.
    • Provides direct nursing care and demonstrates appropriate care techniques by utilizing the nursing process. Accurately transcribes physician's orders, safely administers medications, and performs treatments according to facility policies and procedures; documents resident's response and performs other nursing procedures.
    • Plans and implements orientation process for LPNs and CNAs on assigned unit. Serves as a mentor for newly hired nursing staff. Participates in the professional growth and development of unit nursing staff by providing educational opportunities in conjunction with Educational Services and guidance of facility resource nurses as appropriate.

    Minimum and Additional Requirements

    State Minimum Requirement: Successful completion of a registered nursing education program for professional nursing or an equivalent course of study from a registered nursing education program per Section of the South Carolina Nurse Licensure Act.

    Agency Minimum Requirement: Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing and at least one (1) year of nursing experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

    Additional Comments

    The selected candidate must have the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; be able to stand, walk, reach, pull, push, sloop, bend and climb at least two (2) or three (3) flights of stairs. Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in resident areas for long periods and able to work with repetitive, unusual resident behaviors.
