    BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

    GROUNDSKEEPER

    DEFINITION
    Under supervision, to perform varied grounds maintenance and athletic field preparation work of average difficulty; to operate powered grounds maintenance and construction equipment; and to perform related work as required.

    CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
    Positions in this class are at the entry and working level in the grounds series. Incumbents enter this class to learn and perform District grounds maintenance and equipment operation at a working level.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
    The tasks listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to positions in this class. This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all of the tasks assigned to positions in the class, and it is not expected that all of the tasks listed are necessarily assigned to all positions in the class.

    Mow and edge lawn areas, trim and prune trees and landscape plants; pull weeds; blow and sweep walks and paved areas; water lawns and planted areas; rake leaves; mix and apply herbicides; and prepare soil and plant trees, shrubs, flowering plants, and lawns.

    Operate light and medium power driven, grounds maintenance and construction equipment, such as gang and push mowers, back hoe, front-end loader, blowers, boom truck, dump truck, sprayers, trencher, rototiller and trailer.

    Perform daily vehicle inspection and drive light truck with trailer to transport grounds equipment; wash, service, and maintain equipment, make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; load and unload equipment and materials; detect needed mechanical work and make repair requests; sharpen blades.

    Select tools, materials, and equipment needed to complete assigned work; transport tools, materials, and equipment from truck to the work area; use tools of the trade with skill, observing applicable safety precautions; establish a safe and secure work zone for self and others in the work area; and leave area in clean and safe condition when work is complete.

    Paint lines on athletic fields, drag infields, water track, set out markers, and rake bark under playground equipment; fill in holes and sunken spots on playing fields; install safety pads on goal posts.

    Check irrigation systems; make non-technical repairs to irrigation clocks and control systems. Repair and replace broken sprinkler heads and lines; set timer clocks.

    Clean drainage ditches, gutters, down spouts, and storm pipes; pick up and deliver furniture; collect and dispose of trash.

    Wear protective clothing and use safety equipment and devices, as assigned; serve on assigned committees and teams; participate in District mandated training and retraining programs; and perform related duties as assigned.

    LICENSE REQUIRED
    Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Knowledge of:
    Operation, use, and maintenance of standard powered grounds equipment.
    Methods, materials, and tools used in groundskeeping work.
    Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
    Basic arithmetic and measurement.
    Basic English usage.

    Ability to:
    Perform grounds equipment operation work, including the operation of power mowers and edgers.
    Perform varied groundskeeping work.
    Use tools and equipment in an appropriate and safe manner.
    Perform calculations to mix chemicals and line athletic fields.
    Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
    Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
    Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above, and the ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is experience performing varied groundskeeping work and the operation of power groundskeeping and medium construction equipment.

    Vision: (which may be corrected) to read small print and see small objects.
    Hearing: (which may be corrected) to hear sounds which warn of potential danger; analyze sounds of equipment operation; and determine operating efficiency and needed repairs. Have tolerance to be exposed to noisy conditions and grounds equipment operation.
    Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; twist and bend at torso; turn, raise, and lower head
    Lower Body Mobility: to walk on even and uneven surfaces; bend at waist; stoop; stand for prolonged periods of 4 hours; and step over objects.
    Strength: to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 75 pounds on a frequent basis.
    Environmental Requirements: be exposed to harsh chemicals; work outside without effective protection from the elements as a primary assignment; work with interruptions.
    Mental Requirements: to understand English at a simple level; follow a schedule; apply measurements and simple geometry to line athletic fields.
