    Manager, Line Inspection - Waltham, United States - National Grid

    Job Purpose

    To increase overall Transmission System Reliability in NE by directing contractor resources for all inspection and maintenance activities per the annual Transmission Asset Management Work Plans. Primary overhead line activities include aerial patrols and inspections (emergency and routine), ground-based inspection and repair (wood poles, steel structures, tower footings), steel tower painting and right-of-way maintenance work. Underground cable activities include further program development and implementation of solid dielectric and pipe-type cable inspection and maintenance.

    Key Accountabilities

  • Guide the efforts of the NE Transmission Maintenance group and an external workforce to deliver the various NE Transmission Maintenance programs while ensuring the safety and reliability of the supply infrastructure.
  • Work with the Program Management, Project Management, and Procurement teams to develop the execution plan and all required commercial arrangements necessary for delivery of all Transmission Maintenance programs.
  • Translate business objectives into clearly defined work practices, budget forecasts and construction schedules to support delivery of the Maintenance workplan.
  • Work closely with Safety group to identify and respond as appropriate to any potential hazards, incidents or circumstances that impact the safety, wellbeing and working environment of National Grid employees, customers, contractors, and infrastructure.
  • Support or participate in various Incident Analysis teams and Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) initiatives as required.
  • Manage operational process activities regarding NE Transmission maintenance programs in order to achieve high productivity, low costs, and efficient work practices incompliance with National Grid policies and procedures.
  • Participate in negotiations efforts led by the Project Management & Construction/Contract Management/Procurement Teams and agree with strategic contract terms with suppliers, to ensure future value of National Grid Transmission Maintenance programs.
  • Monitor and adjust labor and material resources for all Transmission maintenance programs. Monitor financial and construction forecasting to ensure projects are delivered according to schedule and budget.
  • Respond to system emergencies across the NE system including both minor and major weather events as the lead for State Damage Assessment (aerial patrols).
  • Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Experience managing a construction workforce with focus on safety, cost control, adherence to environmental regulations, work quality and efficiency.
  • Strong ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team of direct reports.
  • Demonstrates a high level of personal initiative and efficient problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to develop effective working relationships.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, confident, and highly motivated.
  • Ability to work independently and empowered to make decisions to drive progress.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in technical field - or in lieu of a Bachelor's degree, 7 to 10 years of electric utility construction experience, including 3 to 5 years of utility management experience.
  • Possess current certification for, "Flying in the Wires & Obstruction Environment" or commit to obtaining within 12 months of hire for the purpose of supporting aerial flight observations.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical principles and hazards associated with electrical transmission work.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction prints, electrical one-line drawings and other pertinent documents.
  • Strong knowledge of Federal, State and Local OSHA regulations.
  • Familiarity with the tools, equipment, materials, and qualifications of a workforce which support construction or demonstrates an ability to be able to become proficient in those areas.
  • Strong aptitude for computer and business applications used to fully leverage technology solutions in the construction work environment.
  • Familiarity with contracting practices as it relates to bid, awards, and contract language in the construction field.
  • Familiarity with the collective bargaining agreements, grievance resolution, and arbitration process.

    Salary: $143,000 - $168,000

    This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
