Summary:

Performs clinical testing in assigned section/s such asgeneral laboratory, Blood Bank and Microbiology sections, with allduties necessary for accurate and timely results including qualitycontrol, performance improvement, proficiency testing, andpreventative maintenance of equipment. Recognizes abnormal criticalvalues and follows proper guidelines for notifying medical teammembers of results. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomyduties related to daily operations in the laboratory.Provides/dispenses blood products as requested by medicalstaff.

Responsibilities:

• Ensures that the companyphilosophy and core values are evident in the service delivered tocustomers.
• SpecimenCollection/Handling/Processing– obtains blood specimens viavenipuncture and/or fingerstick, accurately identifies and labelsappropriately; answers pneumatic tube system; follows proceduresfor processing and testing specimens, including operating variouscentrifuges; obtains other designated patient specimens as listedin procedure manuals.
• Result Reporting –recognizes errors or improbable results and takes appropriateaction; reports critical values per Policy and Procedure; performstests within established timeframe; performs laboratory testing, ifdesignated, in the following sections: Hematology, Urinalysis,Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, andMicrobiology; performs blood bank procedures, includingcrossmatching, ab id's, and dispensing of blood products; operateslaboratory automated analyzers according to establishedprocedures.
• Performs, analyzes, and records QCaccording to Policy & Procedure following CLIA, CAP, AABB, andJCAHO guidelines; performs and records Performance Improvementindicators and reports results.
• Performsestablished daily and periodic preventative maintenance withdocumentation; troubleshoots minor problems and initiates servicecalls as needed; orders (or notifies assigned associate) andrestocks supplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manual;dates reagents and discards expired reagents.
• Takes responsibility for seeking and achieving professional growthand continued education.
• Assists in trainingnew associates and students in Laboratorypractices.
• Follows CAP, AABB, Compliance,CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.
• Followsestablished protocols for safety, infection control, security,compliance, and the use of hazardousmaterials.
• Utilizes LIS and HIS computersystems appropriately to perform, charge, and report laboratoryresults.
• Completes annual competencyassessment successfully and by assigned date.

Requirements:

• Associates Degree or higher in clinicallaboratory science or medical laboratory technology from anaccredited institution or equivalent laboratory training andexperience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation42CFR
• No experience required forgraduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved oraccredited by NAACLS, or other organizations approved byHHS.

OR

• Six Months of approved clinical laboratoryexperience, which must include a clinical rotation through thefollowing sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology,Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluidsin the U. S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last 5years. (This meets the AMT MLT eligibilityrequirement)
• Must possess Certification for MLTfrom ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS.
• Ifcertification with an expiration date is held, the certificationmust be maintained and kept current.
• NewGraduate that is Board Certified or eligible (must complete BoardCertification in 1 year of hire, Louisianaexcluded)
