    Description

    NON-CERTIFIED HISTOTECHNICIAN

    DEFINITION:
    Performs patient slide preparations from tissue and body fluid specimens for diagnostic purposes.

    Responsible for daily operation of Histology and Cytology equipment used to process and prepare slides for pathology examination on specimens received from surgery, autopsy, biopsy, cytological procedures and specimens received from various physician offices.

    Maintains accurate and up to date records, processes daily charges and maintains histology department supply inventory. Functions under the supervision of the pathologists and/or laboratory manager.


    EDUCATION:

    AS degree in a Laboratory Science or two years experience as a non-certified histotechnician in an accredited Clinical Histology Laboratory or Certification/licensure eligible with ASCP or Equivalent as a Histotechnician following completion of training.



    HISTOTECHNICIAN

    DEFINITION:

    Maintains accurate and up to date records, processes daily charges and maintains histology department supply inventory. Functions under the supervision of the pathologists, histotechnologists and/or laboratory director.


    EDUCATION:

    At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology.



    REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS (IF APPLICABLE):
    Certification/licensure with ASCP or equivalent as a Histotechnician.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Completion of an accredited Histotechnician program.
