    The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Case Western ReserveUniversity invites applications for a non-tenured associate professor faculty position. Thedivision has a long tradition of groundbreaking research in basic science and medicine. Currentareas of research expertise within the division include neural control of breathing, sepsis andneural inflammation, sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease (COPD) and pulmonary hypertension. Collaborations exist with other interdepartmentalresearch centers throughout the university. The university has vigorous interdisciplinary graduateprograms (MS, PhD, and MD), and the division actively engages in medical education andresearch at the graduate, resident and fellow levels. The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Careand Sleep Medicine offers competitive startup packages, excellent laboratory space and corefacilities, and a highly collaborative environment.

    Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have a PhD with a strong record of researchaccomplishments and grant or foundation funding. Successful candidates are expected to have afunded and nationally recognized research program, participate in departmental educationprograms, and contribute to service opportunities. In addition to continuing and expanding theirown research program through innovative and externally funded research projects, the successful candidate will collaborate as part of a funded research program 1) to determine anatomic and functional maps of the ponto-medullary respiratory circuits in rat models of critical illness including sepsis and lung injury; 2) to determine if the etiology of the inflammatory processaffects neuro-inflammation, maladaptation of respiratory network activity and VPV; and 3) toassess the causal relationships between neuro-inflammation, respiratory network activity andVPV and whether anti-neuro-inflammatory therapies will attenuate the increases in respiratoryfrequency and predictability of VPV and restore healthy respiratory network activity. The abilityto apply recent advances in multi-electrode array technology and analysis to map respiratorylocal field potentials throughout the ponto-medullary respiratory network is essential.
