    Summary

    This position is located within the Engineering Service at the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System in Montrose, NY. The Locksmith (Electrical Equipment Repairer) performs a variety of tasks relative to the trade and other related duties as assigned. Travel may be required between campuses and the Community Based Outpatient Clinics as the needs of the medical center warrant.

    Duties

    The Locksmith (Electrical Equipment Repairer) performs a full range of duties associated with the installation, repair, and maintenance of commercially manufactured and mechanical locking devices, to include security devices found on doors, built-in closets and vaults, cabinets, and similar built-in items, as well as their working relationship with various security systems, such as monitors, alarms, timing structures located in the medical center.

    The major duties include but are not limited to:
  • Repairs, overhauls, replace, and installs all types of key locks in or on building structures to include key in knob, rim, mortise, switch, mailboxes, cams, and padlocks;
  • Sets up master systems, utilizing mathematical computation to determine the number of different keys to pass each lock and number of keys and cuts to be made;
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electronic keying devices, requiring knowledge of electrical circuitry, electrical principles and formulas, and their practical application to the equipment and systems;
  • Removes locks from door, disassembles the cylinders, changes combinations by putting in new springs, bottom, master, and top pins for the keys, reassembles, and reinstalls;
  • Opens all types of keyed locks by making keys by impressing, picking, or other locksmithing techniques;
  • Cuts keys from code machine and duplicates keys of all kinds;
  • Installs, troubleshoots, services, and/or repairs locking devices which contain such features as dual locking capabilities and interact mechanically with timing or actuating mechanisms, and security container locking bolts;
  • Repairs electrical malfunctions within locking devises and refers electrical malfunctions to the Electrical Shop;
  • Installs, repairs, or adjusts panic hardware;
  • Repairs, replaces, and changes combination locks on vaults;
  • Conducts investigation to determine if locking devices have been tampered with;
  • Prepares sketches, drawings, and part models to fabricate replacement parts to fine tolerances;
  • Replaces or fabricates broken or worn-out parts such as pins, catches, coils, springs, guides, levers, handles, spools, threads;
  • Rebuilds vaults that have been drilled or bored out by welding and soldering;
  • Repairs, adjusts, overhauls, removes, arid replaces door closers of various types including hydraulic and air pressure; replaces parts, installs new closers; and,
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
