Introduction
Established in 1930 to protect the lakes and streams of the upper Yahara watershed, the District is a wastewater collection and treatment utility serving about 429,000 people in 24 Madison-area owner communities covering about 187 square miles.
The District owns and operates 145 miles of pipe and 18 regional pumping stations that convey approximately 37 million gallons of wastewater to the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant daily.
Through the treatment process, we recover valuable resources from the wastewater we receive before returning clean water to the environment.

Project Engineers provide sustainable solutions for a variety of infrastructure projects, from planning, to design, to construction. Projects are wide-ranging, and require a problem solver who enjoys working together to provide solutions.
The position will report to the Director of Engineering and supplement an existing and highly effective, knowledgeable team in developing and implementing the District's Capital Improvement Plan.
Project engineers work closely with staff in operations, maintenance, and engineering, and with consultants, to develop and implement innovative solutions.
This position requires a high level of skill and proficiency, with work being consistently performed with a high degree of independence.
Assigned projects for this position will likely focus on infrastructure at the treatment plant, however they may also include projects within the collection system.
Salary Information$89, $120,987.36 Annually.

Immediate projects which the hired candidate will be working on may include:
Carrying out projects within the 2024 Capital Improvements Plan.
Managing a large capital project involving replacement of assets in the activated sludge process, potentially implementing a new biological nutrient removal (BNR) process to reduce aeration requirements.
RequiredQualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely-related field.
Possess a Professional Engineer license in the State of Wisconsin or obtain such licensure within six (6) months of hire.
Six (6) years of related professional practice in engineering.Preferred
Experience in wastewater treatment systems engineering, design and construction.
Knowledge of reinforced concrete and hydraulic structure design and construction.
Experience with pumping systems, process piping and valves, HVAC systems, and gas and energy systems.
Possess an Envision Sustainability Professional credential from the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Candidates must possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license or have the ability to legally drive in the State of Wisconsin.
Work is performed in a combination of environments ranging from a standard office environment to project sites, tunnels, pumping stations, etc.
Work may occasionally require exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals. Work will occasionally require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions. Work may also require performance of tasks at elevated levels and in confined-spaces.
This position is eligible for part-time remote work, consistent with District policy.
