    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    Responsible for providing direct patient care and/or direct ancillary support services as directed by the provider or other medical/nursing staff. Also, preforms duties related to the registration and preparation of patient encounters, patient and payment assessment and referral, and post-encounter duties associated with billing and medical records. Perform computer and filing duties.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Medical Assistant
    1. Contact patients via phone or mail regarding the need to be medically evaluated on a periodic basis due to abnormal test results or missed appointments.
    2. Contribute to the orderliness of the patients' and staffs' environment in collaborative responsibility for the patient.
    3. Escalate questions and/or concerns from the patient and/or family member to the nurse responsible for that patient.
    4. Clarify with RN on orders or procedures which involve quality patient care.
    5. Take patients' blood pressure, weight, length, temperature, and head circumference as indicated or directed and record results in appropriate places, notifying nurse responsible for that patient of any unusual findings.
    6. Answer phone and provide a clear message and patient's chart to the nurse when available.
    7. Clean and restock examination room as directed by nurse in charge.
    8. Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections after checking for the presence of allergies and observing for side effects.
    9. Perform skin puncture and venipuncture in laboratory when necessary.
    10. Test eyesight and hearing using the Snellen Eye Test / Hearing Test.
    11. Obtain laboratory specimens.
    12. Complete electrocardiograms.
    13. Monitor and stock supplies on a regular basis, notifying proper person of low levels of supplies.
    Patient Registration Clerk
    1. Provides superior service to all customers.
    2. Responsible for handling a high volume of calls requiring good judgment and decision making. Including calls to and from physicians, patients, patient family members, pharmacies, and other health related agents.
    3. Able to create a patient case, utilize and document as requested.
    4. Notify new patient of doctor's prescription preferences, if applicable.
    5. Schedule, confirm patient appointments and interpreter services, if applicable.
    6. Perform computer skills for scheduling utilizing Athena and/or Dentrix as requested.
    7. Process patient payments, co=pays, and balances owed including smart pay, if applicable.
    8. Perform chart preparation including printing, daily schedules, annual registration/consent form review. Update demographics, patient portal, and income category scale and scan driver's license/ insurance information.
    9. Ensure each patient's insurance is verified prior to being seen.
    10. Verify Title XIX (19) or XXI (21) insurance information, prior to vaccine administration, if applicable
    11. Perform end-of-day batching and counting.
    12. Scan paper documents into electronic chart
    13. Adhere to petty cash policy, if applicable.
    14. Complete ticklers/appointments to schedule within Athena workflow dashboard.
    15. Understand smart pay, able to create a slide patient case. Ensure rev check is complete.
    16. Able to create a Lab Corp indigent form/scan and distribute as needed.
    17. Assist patients with filling out required paperwork who have limited reading/writing abilities, in a discreet and sensitive manner.
    18. Coordinate with navigator to ensure patients are connected to health insurance.
    19. Perform other duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

    1. Ability to work well with public and health care professionals.
    2. Greet public in a professional, courteous manner at all times.
    3. Ability to work as a team member.
    4. Must be neat and professional in appearance.
    5. Basic keyboard/data entry skills, note taking, computer and telephone skills.
    6. Must possess knowledge of basic computer screens, fields and procedures.
    7. Must possess knowledge of basic medical terminology.
    8. Must possess knowledge of basic telephone and paging systems, and routing calls.
    9. Must possess knowledge of basic forms, applications and logs in the health care centers.
    10. Ability to effectively communicate with staff members and general public in a clear, concise, and courteous manner.
    11. Ability to assess skills necessary for patient referral, if applicable.
    12. Ability to assess non-scheduled patients and communicate to nursing/provider staff.
    13. Ability to assess patient records, forms and charts for completeness and accuracy.
    14. Ability to accept responsibility for own actions and receive supervision and direction.
    15. Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient records, communications and needs.
    16. Ability to follow lines of authority when dealing with problems and issues.
    17. Ability to multi-task.
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Requires a high school diploma or a GED. Must be a graduate of an accredited school for Medical Assistants. Requires knowledge of basic medical terminology and procedures.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of an administrative nature. Will occasionally need to lift/carry medical records weighing up to ten pounds.

    WORK SCHEDULE

    Normal work hours for this position are Monday through Friday dayshift, unless otherwise specified by management staff.

    **Please note, this position requires travel to other locations for support on an as needed basis. Notice for travel can be the same day.**
